As long as the receiver can handle a 4 ohm load, the wattage range should be fine. Look on the back near the speaker terminals or consult the manual. Does it say 4 or 8 ohm speakers, or just 8 ohm? If it's not rated for 4 ohm speakers, a low power receiver will run out of gas pretty quick. Other than that it should be fine.
Budget? What is it about the 201's that you find lacking? What kind of music do you listen to?
Couple of thoughts:
First, be aware that your phono cartridge can have nearly as much effect on the sound of your system as the speakers. And, if the stylus heavily worn the sound will certainly be less detailed/crisp. What TT and cartridge are you using? There are good budget cartridges in the $50 price range that can provide excellent detail and a more "forward" sound.
Second, if you are looking for vintage speakers, two small, relatively inexpensive options come to mind; the KLH 24 or 32. Very clear, full, punchy sound. They are taller than 13", but will work equally well laying on their sides. You should be able to find a nice pair locally for $50-85. Generally, they will benefit from new capacitors in the crossover (quite easy to do...can even use wire nuts to install the new caps, and total cost would be less than $10-12), and from sealing the cloth surrounds on the woofers (vintage ar site on ebay has the right stuff). These speakers will bottom out relatively easy, but in your room will provide plenty of output before you get to that point.
There are of course many, many, many other options...and speaker preference is highly subjective (same for cartridges...which are, like speakers, transducers...and therefore widely variable in their sonic characteristics).

You might also consider some of the Advents like the Original Large Advent, Advent One etc. They'd have to lie on their sides as well.

Yes, he had moved on after sale to Jensen. However, if they are truly Advent 1's, those came out in 1978 as a smaller, less expensive version of the New Large Advent.
Do they have wood on top and bottom, and black sides? Or wood all-round?
If your cartridge/stylus is orginal, and you plan on keeping that TT, I would recommend you replace it with the AT92e. Your options are somewhat limited, as that TT uses a P-mount cartridge...but the AR92e is quite good, and quite inexpensive (less than $25).

By the way, the original Advents and their successor, the New Large Advent, are 14" wide...so if you are truly limited to 13", they will not work for you, even on their sides.
Generally, unless you are very patient, you have to be fairly flexible when seeking used speakers...in other words, you have to choose from what's available. Assuming you live in/near a decent-sized metro, Craigslist is your friend, and should provide you with a variety of choices in relatively short order. It's tough to know if you are going to like a pair of speakers based on a quick demo at the seller's location, but this can at least tell you if they are working. Check the condition of the surrounds and the wire terminals before buying (and confirm all drivers are working).
