A life-sized, candy-dispensing "M&M Man" was stolen from an Arnold gas station July 31.
Police say the theft occurred after a failed attempt by the suspect to negotiate the purchase of the M&M Man.
"He offered to buy the M&M Man and was turned down," said Lt. Nick McBroom of the Arnold police.
The suspect, a white male with a red goatee wearing a Cardinals baseball cap, then exited the store with two females, after buying beer.
"He returned to the store by himself, grabbed the M&M Man, dumped out the candy and ran out the door," McBroom said.
The "victim" was last seen wearing white gloves, white shoes and a yellow-coated shell.

Flying Fish Shatters Windshield

MARBLEHEAD, Ohio (AP) -- A woman in Ohio is telling a fish story about one that got away -- from a bird, and damaged her car. Authorities in northwest Ohio say the fish -- a Lake Erie freshwater drum, known as a sheepshead -- smashed a car windshield Tuesday when an eagle dropped its catch from a height of about 40 feet.

Leighann Niles says the impact felt like a brick hitting her Toyota's windshield. The woman from the Cleveland suburb of South Euclid was vacationing along the lake in Marblehead.

UPS truck is Denver's champion parking violator

Sep 9, 3:09 PM (ET)

DENVER (AP) - A single UPS delivery truck is the champion of Denver parking violations, racking up 196 tickets worth nearly $5,700 last year. The Denver Post reported the dubious achievement Wednesday. UPS spokesman Mark Dickens says parking tickets are a cost of doing business in some cities.

The newspaper says parking tickets are on the upswing in Denver and are on pace to hit 670,000.

That would be 14 percent higher than last year and the most since Mayor John Hickenlooper took office in 2003 after making parking tickets a campaign issue.

City officials say they're not trying to drive up revenue. They say the increase is caused by more residential parking zones, more parking agents, replacement of faded no-parking signs and population growth.

Imagine, smashing packages and committing parking violations at the same time! Talent.

And the mayor's name is Hickenlooper! My wife's home town in NE has a lot of Germans (Schmidt, Wimmer, Paus, Hugo, Hunke, on and on). We always get the news from her mom about the classmates who married and so on. I made up a family once to regale her with: the Hockenlugies. :D Her mom was not amused.

Officer Hurt When MRI Pulls Gun

These machines have incredible magnets that will pull pens out of your pocket from several feet away. I'm glad the officer wasn't seriously hurt and the gun didn't go off, but it makes a funny picture. Even funnier is the description of how an MRI works. :D

Thursday, October 1, 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- An off-duty Jacksonville Sheriff's Office deputy was hurt Wednesday when her hand was trapped between her police-issued Glock handgun and the powerful magnet inside an MRI machine.

Police said Joy Smith was in the MRI room with her mother when she apparently forgot about her gun, which was pulled by the magnetic force of the machine, trapping her hand between the gun and the MRI.

Smith was able to free herself, but the gun remained stuck for hours while the machine was powered down, which takes 24 hours. Jacksonville Beach police said Smith's hand was injured and she had difficulty bending her thumb, but it was not known if she sought medical treatment.

"It's a huge magnet. The whole thing just has a plastic case around it," said Beth Ratliff, who operates the MRI machines at Shands.

More than 30 patients a day go through Shands' machines, and there are strict rules for patients and visitors to follow.

Ratliff doesn't work at the Beaches office were the gun got stuck, but she helped explain how it happened.

"The magnet is pulling the gun, so the mass of the gun and the velocity of the magnet gets together and makes it a lot stronger," Ratliff said.

She also explained how the MRI works.

"We use regular waves," she said. "It hits the magnet, the magnet turns and it causes the molecules in your body to turn around, and we get a picture."

Beaches MRI had to close for the rest of the day and a MRI technician had to be flown in to fix the machine. Channel 4's Adam Landau was told that between repairs and lost revenue, the incident cost the center $150,000. Beaches MRI reopened on Thursday.

'Regular' waves?!

I can't imagine how anyone there could have let that officer walk into the room with a gun, or even a gun belt on... they all know way too well about having metal in the room... they almost make you strip naked because of any metal rivets or snaps or similar items in your clothing and shoes..

Man Nearly Dies After Putting Pet Rattlesnake Down Throat

Portland, August 2007

In early August, snake collector Matt Wilkinson of Portland grabbed a 20-inch rattler off the highway near Maupin in Central Oregon in the U.S.

Three weeks later, in a show of daring for an ex-girlfriend, Wilkinson stuck the snake in his mouth. Near death with a tongue swollen to the point it spilled out of his mouth and blocked his throat, he sought emergency-room treatment. Trauma surgeons at the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) saved his life.

I'm trying to think of a "moral of the story" comment to make here, but the sheer stupidity of this act has left me commentless.

The trauma surgeons deprived the guy of a guaranteed "Darwin Award"! Putting a live, fanged rattlesnake's head in one's mouth has to be about the stupidest thing anyone (except a suicidal masochist) could do!

MN Man Charged With Driving La-Z-Boy Under Influence

Duluth News 10/22/09
Proctor, MN A man driving a motorized La-Z-Boy lounge chair hit a parked vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.

Dennis LeRoy Anderson, 62, pleaded guilty Monday in St. Louis County District Court to DWI in connection with the Aug. 31, 2008, incident in Proctor. There were no injuries.

According to the criminal complaint, Anderson drove his motorized chair into a vehicle parked near a Proctor bar. Anderson told police he was traveling from the Keyboard Lounge after consuming approximately eight or nine beers. His blood-alcohol content was measured at 0.29, more than three times the legal limit to drive.

Anderson claimed he was driving the chair fine until a woman jumped on it and knocked the chair off course. He has one prior DWI conviction. He couldn't be reached for comment Wednesday.

Proctor Deputy Police Chief Troy Foucault said the chair was powered by a converted lawnmower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It has a stereo, cup holders and other custom options, including different power levels.
A National Hot Rod Racing Association sticker is posted on the chair's head rest.
The chair had a small steering wheel, about a third of the size of a golf cart's, coming straight up from the middle of the La-Z-Boy.

Proctor City Prosecutor Ronald Envall said he charged Anderson under the portion of Minnesota law that makes it a crime to operate a self-propelled motor vehicle while impaired by alcohol or drugs. He declined further comment.

Anderson had to forfeit his motorized chair to Proctor police, who plan to auction it with other forfeited items, Foucault said. Duluth defense attorney David Keegan, who represented Anderson, declined comment.

Special Weapon Ferret

Bad enough that this guy tried to make off with a ferret by putting it down his pants, but then he hauled off and wielded it. :nono:

Thu Oct 29, 8:19 pm ET

JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla. – It's one thing for shoplifters to hide plunder in their pants. But a live ferret? Police said a homeless man in north Florida did just that. And he made it out the door before being challenged. Rodney Bolton, 38, was charged with theft over the $129 animal that police say he took from a pet store in Jacksonville Beach.

A 17-year-old witness confronted Bolton in the parking lot and was bitten by the animal after the man allegedly shoved it in the teen's face.

That confrontation makes the ferret a "special weapon" under Florida law. So Bolton also faces battery charges for dangerously wielding the animal.

Cat denied visiting rights for jailed Buddhist bank robber

Nothing against Buddhism here (cats may in fact be a higher form of life anyway, I wouldnt mind coming back as one). I just thought the court's reply was kinda funny.

A Buddhist bank robber has had his request for his cat to have visiting rights to him in jail turned down by a court – despite his plea that it is the reincarnation of his mother.

03 Nov 2009

Peter Keonig, 46, is serving five-years for armed robberies in Werl, Germany.
He went to court this week demanding the right for his cat Gisela to be allowed to visit him in jail "because she is my dead mum".

Buddhists believe that people come back as other animals after death. He said: "I know it is mummy. She looks after me just the way she did. I need to see her like other prisoners see their wives and children."

But the court turned him down. "While we respect the religious freedom of individuals, the accused has not been able to furnish proof that his deceased mother has been reborn in a cat. Therefore, the request for visiting rights for the feline is rejected."

The court did say he would be allowed to write to the cat.

The trauma surgeons deprived the guy of a guaranteed "Darwin Award"! Putting a live, fanged rattlesnake's head in one's mouth has to be about the stupidest thing anyone (except a suicidal masochist) could do!

The only thing I could see as being more stupid, is if he attempted to put it in the other body orifice!

Pair Find Stranger Asleep on Couch Cuddling a Bear

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: December 8, 2009

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) -- Authorities said a Mississippi Gulf Coast man apparently thought he was at his girlfriend's place when he wandered into another couple's home and fell asleep on their couch. Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd told The Mississippi Press that a couple in the St. Martin community found a stranger snoozing on their couch and cuddling a teddy bear late Saturday.

The sheriff said the couple told the 34-year-old man to leave and he drove off in a dark blue Chevrolet Silverado. Byrd said deputies saw the truck weaving, and at one point it mowed down some mailboxes.

The man was charged early Sunday with trespassing and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released on a $1,000 bond.

One of my good friends (and most recent roommate) did that when we were living next door to each other in college - the building was mirror-imaged, he got turned around when hammered and woke up in the apartment matching his down the hall. :lmao:
