eBay prices are all over the place lately - from 25 to 125 bucks. If I were you I'd better look for Beta II - IMHO better sounding preamp if you want to make a set.
That's what I have: Beta II+Alpha II.

I have both a Beta II and Beta 30 along with an Alpha II amp. The Beta 30 came with it when I bought it, but I then acquired an Alpha II mainly for asthetics as it was part of the matching set when new.

Although I use the Beta II now, the Beta 30 has more functionality and sounds a little 'tighter' imo. Lots of variables of course could be in play here though including the condition of caps etc.

I don't think $90 is crazy money for these in perfect condition. Any less than $75 is probably a deal and anything over 100 is probably too much. So I'd say if you want one and don't want to wait around for the next one to come up for sale, then bite the bullet.

(I have no affiliation with the seller).

I second this suggestion: I had a Nikko Beta 20 and then switched to an earlier Beta 2 model, and my Alpha 2 got benefited from a clearer sound. Also, built quality of the Beta 2 is better than that of its sucessors, at least IMHO.

I found a Beta III preamp somewhere around a year ago. I recall it was for approximately the same amount, well, it was $110-$120 including shipping.

It's a solid preamp, and I'm satisfied with it for the time being. Solid construction, and compliments my system well.

I have never heard a Beta II, but from what I have read, it should be a good piece of gear.

I still run searches for a Beta V pre. Not often, but you never know when one will pop up.

You'll probably find this in the 'Dollars and Sense' forum shortly, where questions of value should be asked.

preamp

This really isn't a question of value more like hows the sound and should I buy it.I talked to the seller and he said he would let me know if it goes before next friday if not it's mine.

what about this one?

Dynaco Pat-4 preamp+FM-5 tuner- I have seen this name here alot, sonicly speaking which one" in your opinion" sound better?:scratch2:

I am not a big fan of the Pat 4 -- kind of transistory sounding, and the control pots don't have a good feel to them. On the other hand, it has good set of controls. The first Beta preamp was not in the same league as the later ones, the later ones being quite nice. Can't comment on the price, other than noting that the PAT 4 doesn't command big money (and if really cheap, and you are capable of modifying it, it might not be a bad pick up).

I don't have the tools or the time for mods. Thanks for all the input.I'll grab the Nikko if it's still there.

one more time

Theres now a Bryston pre for the same money, sound wise wich one would you buy?:scratch2:

Bryston has an excellent reputation (and as far as I know the company is still in business, which is helpful if you ever have a problem). As long as it has the facilities you need (tone controls, tape loops, a phono stage etc.) and you like how it sounds, I'd be hard pressed to recommend against it.
