Here is my limited recollection of discussions with Marc Morin. He felt like that foam washer was not necessary at all. On any table he worked on he would completely clean and remove any residual foam at the top of the platter well. He would also clean out the platter well to make sure none of that hardened foam remained in the well. When reassembling he would not put any type of washer back in place. His perspective was that as long as you kept the well filled to the brim with a synthetic oil, it would float up any debris that might find its way under the platter and into the well.
Others may have other good logical options, but I learned over time that Marc had defendable reasons for everything he did or did not do. If it was me I would follow his guidance and use a small bottle and pipe-ette to keep the oil level topped off.
Finally I would think that if you want to experiment with Teflon, Delrin or felt, have at it. It would be easy to undo if needed. Good luck
The M44 is the same as the M55, I believe. These have gone up in price since I bought mine but it’s a good one. Might be cheaper options I don’t know about.

I bought several cheaper styli for the 55 and none tracked at all. The VividLine was about $75 which was a great value. Now I’m not sure.

Well what do know, I got my XB1! and I did not have to pay through the nose too get it either, $336 including shipping from Sweden. I think that´s a bargain for a fully restored and revised table. Looking forward to setting it up and listening to Jennifer Warnes The Hunter for the first time. On to the next addition to my setup, some AR speakers...

Reach out to @StuartB or I, see if we can help you out. Marc Morin, God rest his soul, worked with Stuart and I to pass on some of his upgrades to help him wrap up some project he still had on his table. We do what we can to carry on some of his work.
We can also supply some advice if you want to try and do some of the work yourself.
You might also try @sfrost, he does some really wonderful work.

Finally got myself another AR-XA, I owned one when I first started getting into the hobby around 20 years ago. I didn’t know what I had and sold it. Then in 2013, I got an XB and did a bunch of work on it, Marc helped me and @AvFan even made me a beautiful cherry base. Well we had our first kid in 2016 and I needed some money so sold it to someone one here, not sure who. I’ve regretted it ever since and has fate would have it, I finally got my hands on another XA at a pretty good price. Everything seems to work ok, old belt spins at 3.48 rpm and I will be getting a new one as well. Already ordered the tonearm rest, I will be building a new base for it as my woodworking skills are much much better since 2013. I plan on stripping the top piece and painting it. Really liked the metallic white cream I saw Mister Pig had done for him. Sending out the arm to @sfrost this weekend hopefully and adding a technics tube for easy cart swapping. Just collecting the parts and trying to read this whole thread, on page 30 so far. I’m sure I will have questions but looking forward to hearing her sing soon.
Is this cart worth getting a replacement stylus for? If yes, which one?
