Open Baffle Epiphany!

Thank you, sir! I think that Goldwood is my next project. Maybe a pair in a tall H-frame since I'm sitting the current one on a table to stay on-axis anyway (alleviating the cancellation problems Reekie noted by having his dipole very close but on the floor, putting him in the null), or some sort of force-cancelling arrangement like Pass' slot-load. And I think I'll give that FE-126En a whirl - price is right.

Just for fun, here's a waterfall taken from the listening position with the sub as pictured, rear nearfield. That resonance at ~41 Hz is the length mode of the room, since the sub is facing lengthwise. Others are nicely minimized. If I place the sub to the side of the MLP, that one mostly goes away and the width is excited. It's directional placed there, though, so I far prefer the rear. I think the brain has a tough time placing sounds directly to the rear, so just lumps them with the rest up front.

Sorry about the size, the REW graphs get all fuzzy on me when I go much smaller.

For those with experience with measuring bass, keep in mind that that pretty graph measured nearfield would look far less pretty measured outside of the nearfield.

Absolutely, and as noted in my original post it is far less pretty. It's no mystery why the nearfield location sounds dramatically better.

I was hesitant to try the H frame thing in my tiny room but from what I can tell so far I think it's going to work pretty well.
The cardboard mockup ain't pretty, but it served the purpose and it actually sounds really good.

In finally finished my H Bombs using the Way Basics storage cubes. I used the 10" MCM woofers from my DIY build.
For now I have each H Bomb supporting one of the Tektons. The height actually ended up about perfect.

I goofed a couple of cuts so they took me a lot longer than they should have, but still, it was a quick build.

The system is:
Marcmorinified AR-XB > Denon DL103M > Acoustat RP-2 > .
1)Decware ZENSE84B>Tekkton OB 4.5
2)Mini DSP > Yamaha M40 > H Bombs

The Tektons are running full range for now and the H Bombs are crossed in at 100Hz (this is simply because how they were set up with MY DIY build. I'm sure I'll end up tweaking this)

Initial impressions are good, really good: the bass finally sounds like it belongs and the imaging is still crazy good.

The placement for sure needs tweaking, both of everything in general and of the Tektons in relation to the H Bombs.

Wes, since I posted earlier in this thread about the H bombs I sure am glad they're working well with the Tektons. Very handsome combination.

I tried my H-frames on concrete filled plinths (mine are spiked) that raised them about the same height off the floor as your wooden slabs and performance suffered. Did you try yours on the floor?

Funny you mentioned that.
I had the feeling that the stacked configuration as it stood was not bringing out the best in the setup. I moved the Tektons back onto their stands and put the H Bombs on the floor just to the side of them. Much, much better. Bass isn't bloated at all as it was just a bit before.
My very small 11x12 room makes things a bit more interesting but it sounds really great even as it sits.

I've been enjoying my OB this weekend. Even though they are still not operating as intended I brought them up from the basement, wired the Audio Nirvanas to my two subs and they sound damn nice.

Power is being supplied by my KT88 amp. I moved the BC mono blocks to a different system just to make certain their were no issues with them. Happily they are working fine as I suspected they would.

I'm not sure where I'll go from here. I love the ANs and wish I could put them to better use. Anyway they sound great with jazz, ambient, acoustic guitar or whatever I throw at them.

wes,

looking really good!

Thanks! I'm really digging those Tektons. I need to tweak my crossover points now that I have the H Bombs in full effect. However, that may take some time since I just acquired ANOTHER pair of OB's:

I just picked these up from jjohnson this morning. After hearing the OB sound, my beloved B&W M803's just didn't have the same appeal (it's mostly your fault, poultrygeist--the bill is in the mail) . I only have about 30 minut6es with them so far but I'm quite pleased.
They'll need to win over my wife since she has said that the B&W's were never to leave....

The 8" full range drivers are Dayton Audio PS-220's. The 15" drivers are Celestion T5413. I bought these without ever hearing them, believe it or not. The price was right and I know Jeff has great taste in speakers so I was confident.
Other details:

"4 ohm impedance with a 95+ db Efficiency. In my 12x20x8 living room they fill the room very generously with my amplifier meters peaking at .02 Watts. They crank at .2 Watts. So long as your amplifier can handle the 4 ohm impedance they should work just fine with tube grear I think.

45" x 18" x 1-3/4" Solid Maple Baffle w/ 22" x 14" Walnut Base. Real Wood, not MDF, Plywood, or Veneered Substrate. Flush Mounted Drivers from the Front. The Baffle also has really nice 1/2" Roundovers on the Vertical Edges and the backs of the Driver Holes.

12 Awg. Solid Core Copper Wiring that is routed through the Baffle for a nice clean apearance from behind.

Gold Plated Banana Jacks, and Crossover Components housed in a small Project Box so there are no ugly Coils or Soldered Ends of Wires on the Terminals visible."

Wes those are gorgeous and I've been lusting after the PS-220's ever since they came out.

Glad my palavering over OB's paid off for you.
