Maureen, I don't know you, but I understand your situation. I struggled with depression for over 20 years. It affected every aspect of my life, causing irrational fears and behavior. It cost me jobs, friendships, and if not for the love and strength of my wife, it would have destroyed my marriage.
My salvation was finally admitting I needed help, and getting on medication. If you are not yet taking an anti-depressant, you should talk to your psych about it. If you are, then take it religiously. My fear was that meds would make me a 'zombie', leave me with no personality and no emotions. That's completely wrong; the meds clear your mind and allow you to finally be the person you truly are, and experience the true emotions that have been filtered through your off-kilter brain chemistry. I have plenty of experience with recreational substances, I know the difference between reality and the various alternatives. This is real.
Just remember, it is always too soon to give up hope. I hit rock bottom in a parking garage in Toronto 3 years ago. I thought I was on the verge of losing everything, including my one rock, my wife. Now I'm living as the person I knew I could be, my life is the best it has ever been, and I have nothing but optimism for the future.
My best to you,
