Paul Kantner died today, how sad.

SOB! Met Paul many times over the years. Sorta sharp edged at first, but once you got to know him he was a really nice guy. Very sad. Time to spin the Takes Off and the Volunteers LP's.

This one is hard to handle. I mean, In '67 I was 6... and I have known about JA ever since I was 6. I haven't quite got the fact that I aint young anymore and these rock idols of mine are just (or were) 13 or 14 years older than me. This is getting scary. Rest In Peace Paul. I was just playing Jefferson Airplane Takes Off the other day. Paul and Marty wrote a song called Come Up the Years, first track on side 2, that is just so beautiful. I think I'm going to go listen to that right now. Album is still on the TT...

Saw him at the Filmore several times as he never left San Fransisco, the mayor actually gave him the keys to the city.

Nobody gets out alive folks! RIP Paul.

On a somewhat lighter note, I just noticed how much Grace Slick look like Julia Louise Dreyfus................. (but not so much now)

Ahh- pooh! Kantner and Slick were IT for me with that whole west coast bay area space revolution thing ...
Baxters, Volunteers and Bark - oh My!
and Blows! Rock music from Heinlein's generation ship ideas -
they won the Science Fiction Hugo Award for that - woah!
Gotta Hijack the Starship indeed - and Baron von Tollbooth ...
30 Seconds over Winterland was my go to album for a long time ...
I know Jorma and Jack are getting on in years too!
RIP Paul - clear jets to ya!

Lather, Redux ...

He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said,
Is it true that I'm no longer young?

Sad to say, but this is just the tip of the iceberg for the rock icons passing on, as with anything (and anyone) boomer. Seems to me, the last big wave that left this large a hole in our musical world would have been Elvis, Holly, and company. They're all gone, but the beat goes on!

Of course, for a lot of us, what hits the hardest is our own sense of mortality ...

Just heard the news from Jim Ladd on XM. My heart is well, just lead. Spinning Surrealistic Pillow in Paul's honor. Say what you will, but The Airplane was so fundamental to our generation's hopes and aspirations. A voice that changed many of our ways of viewing the world. I turn 60 in a couple weeks. All this mortality amongst my icons is really challenging me to re-evaluate what I'm going to do with the years or days (who knows?) I have left in the life.

Indeed, John. Spinning 'Blows Against The Empire' here.

Damn....another legend gone.....

Was just enjoying "Blows Against The Empire" on R2R earlier today....

Travel well, Paul !

I haven't followed Paul the last few years but I've been a huge Jefferson-whatever fan my whole life. Like going as far as concert tape trading and finding obscure collaboration tracks. Really sad to hear this.

Did anyone else have this one?

Don't have it but I've heard the whole thing. And Planet Earth Rock&Roll Orchestra.
