Paul Kantner died today, how sad.

Yeah, I think Blows Against the Empire and Planet Earth Rock & Roll Orchestra are probly more widely known than the KBC Band album, but I could be wrong.

Did anyone else have this one?

I have that... I really do like the song America. Haven't listened to it in decades. Maybe pull that one out too.

Jefferson Airplane has always been one of my favorites.

Forget coming in 3s; I think they are starting to come in 30s.

Or maybe 33s. 33 1/3rds, even (counting Keith Richards, who is surely at least a third dead by now)...

"Sketches Of China" -- an excellent number from that LP.

It seems in many of the resent early deaths in rock and blue artists all had one thing in common....smokeing thru out their lives.Lemmy Killmister ive followed for the last few decades and he always seemed to have a cigarette in his hand.Im sure many shared other vices juring the hey day of R&R drug wise but those dam smokes are killers for sure!

strength/peace at this time for the kantner family
He was 74,,,,,, I say if he enjoyed smoking over the last 50 or 60 years then so be it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
The 60's and 70's was a time when A LOT of musicians made their mark,,,,, real musicians with real talent, but now they are coming of age,,,,,,,, expect more of this over the next several years

More sad news.

Love the Airplane and even Jefferson Starship had some moments.

I give Paul Kanter credit. He never seemed to stray too far from his values. He remained the same guy who told the Hell's Angels off thus standing up for his friend and band mate.

RIP Paul. Lot of guys up there to jam with. Sad for us, but good for you.

This month's passing of Bowie, Frey, and now Kantner put me in mind of a line from an old song: "If there's a rock and roll heaven, you know they've got a helluva band!" ...and the stage just got a little more crowded and the amps turned up just a little louder. Gonna have to dig out the PERRO session bootlegs and give 'em a spin when I get home this afternoon.

I think I'll dig out "Sunfighter", one of the lesser mentioned after the Airplane albums. I'll always remember seeing the original Starship in '75 at the Capital Center- Paul jumped off the stage to break up a fight going on near the stage, then continued with the show.

RIP Paul. Saw the Starship a couple times, never the Airplane. I'm on a quest to see Jorma and Jack when I get the chance.

I caught Hot Tuna a few years back, 2006 maybe? Definitely worth the effort to go see them--sooner rather than later, if you know what I mean.

Exactly. Hot Tuna electric is what I'm looking for. Seeing those pics of Jorma and Jack with the Airplane raised my interest.

While reading this thread I started to think about which, of many, was my favorite tune by the Airplane. I keep coming back to the live version of "Plastic Fantastic Lover" from Bless Its Pointed Little Head. RIP Paul.

Just heard the news from Jim Ladd on XM. My heart is well, just lead. Spinning Surrealistic Pillow in Paul's honor. Say what you will, but The Airplane was so fundamental to our generation's hopes and aspirations. A voice that changed many of our ways of viewing the world. I turn 60 in a couple weeks. All this mortality amongst my icons is really challenging me to re-evaluate what I'm going to do with the years or days (who knows?) I have left in the life.

I am right there with you. Certainly has me thinking hard about an early retirement... just have no ideas how many good days are left.
