Realistic was manufactured for Radio Shack by a number of different manufacturers, I think.

Tandy owned Radio Shack. Realistic was a Radio Shack brand, with many OEM manufacturers, some obvious (Koss, Shure and ELAC), and some not so.

Off the record; what do you think of the Behringer unit? What does it do? Compressor/expander?

The Behringer is a DAC/ADC/sample rate converter. I run the digital-out on my Squeezebox Duet to the SRC2496. It does a hell of a job upsampling from 16/44 to 24/96. Many people use it just for the upsampling qualities and feed it to a higher end DAC. Its also great for digitizing vinyl, as it has analog inputs, which can be converted to the sample rate of your choice.

The speakers on the walls are the top halves of my Infinity RS 2.5's. The lower halves are in the homemade cabinets below. Notice the darker cabinet doors -- they're grille cloth.
Yes, I know, sacrilege to actually cut vintage infinitys in half! But hey, they're mine, I'm the original owner (bought new in '81 when I was 16). Anyway it's a clean cut and could easily be put back together. The sealed bass cabinet integrity was not harmed in doing so.
I live in L.A. (suburbs) in a condo, so I can't really crank 'em like I used to. Don't currently have the amp to drive them properly anyway. The room is about 19.5' x 24', 16' ceilings.

These are two views (front and back) of my soon to become listening room in the basement of my soon to be new house. I've been researching on room treatment over the past week and more - gradually understanding the principles.
Was there this afternoon and did a quick reverb measurement. I used a hammer and my stopwatch. 4.5 seconds decay time for a hammer bang, 6 seconds for a loud yell.
I do have a lot of work to do still...

Sorry, no such good view. But you can see the sea if you twist your neck a bit. It's a basement room overlooking the backyard...
Going to be a major project down there. I won't be fixing any DAT decks or TTs for a while...
And BTW, I used my mobile phone to playback a couple of tracks I had stored there in MP3 format through the speaker. You can't believe the sound level and warmth of sound as well as the presence of bass. I can't imagine what it will sound like when I bring in a pair of real loudspeakers. Has got to be boomy to say the least. Will take lots of bass traps and anti-reflection panels to make that room sound properly.
