Pioneer PL-55DX TT

I just bought a Pioneer PL-55DX turntable and when it plays it will speed up and then slow down. I think it might need a new belt, which i can't find anywhere on the web. Can anybody tell me what might be the issue? Thanks

The PL-55DX is a direct drive turntable, not a belt drive. You may find the service manual that you can download for Vinyl Engine. You will need to register to download their manuals.

I am thinking you have a dirty pitch control pot. I had a slightly later Pioneer that developed that problem and it turned out to be the pitch pot.

I have the PL 55x and it'll sometimes does the same thing to me. Pressing down on the 33rpm button will usually cure it. I imagine the button assembly is goofed up. Perhaps the pot is dirty as was mentioned above.

I have one of those, as well as a PL-71. They are very similar in their motor and switches, but the 55DX is a semi-auto, and the 71 is fully manual. I had exactly the same problem with the 71, and cleaning the pitch pots didn't help. Turned out to be the switches under the speed selector buttons. Look for this thread for an explanation of how I cured this problem. I still have several of the switches if you need a couple of them.

what ^^^^ said. that is the REAL fix. clean or replace the microswitch and no more speed problems.

thanks ghog for the info. i found where the switch is under the speed buttons but i am wondering i would i clean this? Maybe i should just get a switch from you. What would you charge? Would the switch require soldering? i know it's alot of questions, sorry.

Yes, it would require soldering. Really easy soldering. I will just send them to you if you want a couple. PM me your address and I'll send them to you slow mail. As for the original switches, I tried cleaning them with Deoxit and it didn't help. I used a heated wire to make a small hole in the plastic case and sprayed them both twice. One of them continued to show 2-4 ohms resistance in spite of the cleaning, so I just replaced them. Replacing is easy.
By the way, there are two of them in the 55DX, but they're not stacked together like in the 71. Look around and you'll find the other. Replace both.
