Hello, I know all of us would love to keep every cool turntable we come in contact with, but wives tend to not share in our passion ... which Pioneer is rated better between the PL-518 or PL-55X?

Personally, I'd go with the PL-55X.

Holy crap..

And here's me planning to sell my SL-10 because I think three turntables is an excess.

specs

ooh I was just think about the 55 when I noticed thanks to the specs that the 55 doesn't have the speed adjustment the 518 does... I would think after years of wear the adjustment would be needed

The guy I bought my Ariston RD11s from (which has a damaged bearing, of course he didn't know that) had a garage FULL of turntables and various other stereo equipment. Shelves, 8-feet-high, on wheels. Said he had about 150 turntables. Talk about hoarding! But if that makes him happy, so be it. He is probably about 75. (he said he had two other 'storage units' packed to the brim)

:yikes:

I'm new to turntables, but to me the specs are much better for the pl-518. Yet, I'm seeing more votes for the 55x. 73dB rumble to 58dB and 0.03% wow/flutter to 0.05%. The 518 wins in both right? I'm curious because my first TT is the pl-520, which according to the description, it seems the 518 was built to emulate at a lower price.

518 wins...

Well, thank you everyone for your input, it seems like there is quite some endearment for the 55 (probably because of the nice wood base) but as one post put it the 518 does have some better specs (and it has speed adjustment)... I do think then I will keep the 518 unless there is some major revelation that I am not seeing for the 55...
again thank you!

The PL-518 is very nice. I bought one in Near Mint condition at a yard sale a couple years ago. Hard to find fault with it other than cosmetics/looks/snob appeal. I have no experience with the 55 model.

I'd go with the 518. The 55 has one of those sproingy suspensions...those annoy me. The 518's only issue that I'm aware of is that the feet rot out. But someone else recently posted a thread on how to install NOS Technics 1200 feet on a 518, problem solved.

Hi, Can I put 1200 feet on my 2000? If so where is a good place to score some?
