Prices.... Going Up!!!

What size house has 30K in taxes?

What state?

That's crazy.
Not that I know the answer to the specific question, but if I hadn't had exemptions in place for 30 years my current taxes would be around $25,000 total.
$30,000 is about the average in my zip code for newly bought houses.
That's in Texas.

The house foot print is 1200 feet, quarter acre sized lot.

The average new house in your zipcode is over 1.5 million? Geez what county do you live in? I mean I guess I get it someone has to pay for all those professional high school football fields.

Actually, the average is around $1,000,000 in my zip code, which in this county puts you in the vicinity of $30,000.
Houses on both sides of me are $2,000,000 properties.
I of course didn't pay anything close to $1,000,000 30 years ago.
This was a working class neighborhood. And I stress was.

I live in Travis county.

Travis county's will do that to you but I have that beat...by percentage at least. My house is worth roughly 80,000 and my taxes are $3,674. My house falls just inside of two separate tif districts and a special school tax zone. My standard taxes would only be $1,133 this year if not for all the special taxes. It's no wonder all the old people around me are moving and selling to slum lords. And the really fun part. The homestead exemption is only a portion of the standard tax rate so it saves me a whopping 113 bucks. Which is basically pointless.

Illinois.... one of the worst states for (high) property tax rates. Granted, his assessed vlaue is high, but probably not as high as The Market might bear. Houses of the type and where he lives list for days, sometimes hours (slight exaggeration) before the bids come pouring in... and they sell fast. Lots of "cash" deals, too... for properties going @ $1M and more. I thought maybe this is a BlackRock thing, but upon closer examination by my brother, who is geographically much closer to this situation, it seems that "normal/real people" are buying these very expensive properties and are paying with cash. Dang, Americans be rich even by Luxembourg standards.

Okay, I'm done complaining about the price of things... my property tax is $3K per year on a $400K house, 1/10th of what some pay, and I live in the "good" neighborhood with houses going from $300,000 to $500,000 which is expensive for ABQ, although there are some new ones neaby that are in the 600K to 700K range.
Indeed, count yourself fortunate so low a property tax rate. In fact, it's as if the guvment there is lettin
you live for free, so to speak.

yes, it is a pretty cheap place to live with excellent food (green chile !) decent weather (no extremes) great scenery (expansive vistas everywhere)... if you can put up with all the crime

"with all the crime" -- what part of the country we talkin' bout? Where my dad's place is, crime is WAY low ... but not so far away, say, 50 miles due east, crime is WAY high, like, CHICAGO, city of + environs ... high.

PS: Of course, the worst criminals are in the county assessors office and in Springfield.

I had planned to move to New Mexico when I retired, but so far it hasn't happened.
As a general rule, my property taxes would drop by about two thirds if I did so.
That's buying a house of the same value as I have in Texas.....which is unlikely.

It's no wonder all the old people around me are moving and selling to slum lords.
Honestly, Texas isn't a great place for retirees who've owned the property for a long time, seen the property values rise, and have a reduced or fixed income.
If the legislature really wanted to help, they'd freeze property taxes when you reached 65.
It's actually pretty simple.
Mine went up $3,000 last year alone.

Based on what I read over here, you're not wrong.

When prices shoot up, crimes shoot up. There is some logic to it.
I don't know what has happened in the USA over the past 3 years vis a vis homelessness...but here in "The Great White North"...it's been shocking to most people, and a definite antecedent to both increased crime rates and increased seriousness. In places that had been accustomed to pretty much only property crime, the day to day week to week realities of crimes of violence are freaking many right the f%k out...
