Prices.... Going Up!!!

And the rest of the post war world caught up decades ago. That ship has sailed, and we,re probably not going back.
It's true that we "probably won't" go back, but it is certainly possible. After WWII, the US created the entire set of "rules" by which the global economy would operate. There's no technical reason we can't do that again, but time is running out to change. In another decade or two, it will probably be too late.

I would much rather drive the bus than be a mere passenger on the bus.

Power abhors a vacuum.

There's two maj strikes going on in Canada (dockworkers/postal staff) costing millions upon millions of dollars to the economy each day, along with a coalition government at the helm.

Then there's the possible coming "tariffs", which will affect both countries in a neg way.

So, for the many it's either eat or pay rent... but not both!

You can imagine what will happen food prices in the immediate future.

Q
Those tariffs may never appear , those are barging tool hopefully both sides work together to prevent that ! North American trade is more important than ever with the rest of the world coming apart !

I hope you are right, because that's not what happened last time. The farmers are still suffering from those tariffs and the taxpayers had to shore up the farm base (at least here in Iowa, not sure of other states) because they were all in the red and people still remember the farm crisis from the 80's.

I think both of us inserted the "it-may-not-happen" when we shared our thoughts on some of the words used by politicians. However, if severe tariffs do occur, all parties will suffer, some more than others.

Stat-wise it's already been estimated how much and to what degree how trade will affect BOTH countries.

The big elephant in the room is from over there, and is inevitable that... It will react!

The benefits:

Returning as much manufacturing as possible provides better jobs than a service economy.
Manufacturing technology leads to more innovation because "Making things" is more difficult (more valuable) than waiting tables.
Making things strengthens national defense, reduces dependency, and reduces risks of war.
The "rust belt" is the prize we won for exporting our manufacturing. We don't need more of that.

True to an extent, but it does take time (years in some cases) to build plants, educate a work force, and obtain gov't support which depends upon the will of the powers to be.

This is wherein the "Elephant" I alluded to, is able to gain the upper hand in facilitating certain enterprises.

Then one has to take into account labour costs, shipping and access to natural resources, which these cases can give a huge advantage compared to other competitors.

Many of those things that take time were exported in far less time.

Time for me to cue up “American Woman”.

A lot of confusing and conflating of Capital's power and state power herein...very different animals...Capital will always "act" so as to grow...independent of what particular states do or do not. Where state action impedes or threatens, it will act in its own interest...regardless of who's "driving the bus".
