Pro sports

Using sports as a platform for protest has been going on for years -- I remember how shocked people were when Tommie Smith gave the black power salute after winning a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Here's a bit more info from Wikipedia:
The 200 m winners podium was the stage for arguably one of the most iconic moments of the 20th century. As people railed against Apartheid in South Africa and racial segregation in the United States, Smith and Carlos raised their fists to show solidarity with people fighting internationally for human rights. They were booed and forced out of the Games by the president of the International Olympic Committee at the time, Avery Brundage.

Thanks for the info. Who knows? It might come up in Trivial Pursuit. Nothing trivial about this dude -

Looks like the cash cow udder is starting to dry up already

Not wanting to discuss the right, wrong, or indifference about pro athletes and the pre-game festivities, but DirecTv had gotten so many complaints from paying customers over the recent actions that they have started refunding money to pro football subscribers.

It will be interesting to see just how many different industries depending on pro sports take hits. I already heard that sales of football jerseys has tanked. I understand the athletes' right to voice their opinions. Maybe they should have picked a different venue to do so. Looks like the paying fans are voicing THEIR opinion with their wallets.

DirecTV and their lawyers, who have been drowning in overcharge litigation, are not commenting on how many subscribers are dumping the service over the 'taking a knee' mess. Barrons and WSJ are reporting that one person stated that when he cancelled, the customer service rep told him that she had 5 other callers who had done so earlier in the day.

I think it was polled that

65% disapprove of the actions they are seeing at the games
12% don't have an opinion one way or another
23% aprove

But the ones that thinking it's the other way around live in a bubble and only view what they want to believe.

Personally for me, I'll pay for entertainment but not for others agenda and opinion, I do not find that entertaining at all.

I have been finding myself watching less and less sports as I'm getting older into my mid 50's.

I hardly ever watch any sports until the World Series or sometimes a big final game.

I have not watched an entire football game in years and now I don't really watch any football.

I did watch a few plays of the
Bears-Steelers game but why in the world would I want to sit in front of a TV when it's such a beautiful weekend day?

It really has become redundant and boring to me and I have better, more enjoyable ways to spend my free time, especially with my wonderful wife of 32 Years.

This is me now, just without your wife...:p

I know, Dan, but there is a reason this is happening.
I don't want to kill the thread by bringing up the elephant in this parlor, but there it is.
It's a lead in for debate, but the problem is, this is not the place for it.

I have to agree with you. I wanted to just get folks to understand that its not disrespect for the flag or the anthem. I give them credit for putting it all on the line for something they believe in, without consideration of financial consequences to get the message out.

With Nevada kicking in $750 million to build the Raiders a new stadium, NFL teams have now received nearly $7 billion in tax money to build stadiums over the last two decades.

According to an analysis from ESPN, the total price tag to taxpayers for building new stadiums and renovating old ones has been $6.7 billion since 1997. That includes 19 new stadiums and three major renovation projects.

And there we part on agreement.

Propaganda is very powerful, todays media is nothing more.

We see things different most the time Steve but your a good man, I do know that.

I'll leave it at that:(

I think it would have gone a long way with the public had NFL players and their community leaders would have "taken a knee" about black on black crime years ago instead of this ham-fisted knee jerk display.
