Sometimes a man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do. This Christmas, I did not want to drive my wife about 800 miles to her family in Alberta. I mean I was bone tired at the end of the work year, and didn’t want to face three different mountain passes in the middle of winter. And then there are my sister-in-laws, who are definitely strange.
The drive, divided into 2 days, (plane tickets were $2k each, return. Normally $450 or so) was evil. Slush, ice, white out conditions and we saw several abandoned wrecks. Our Santa Fe with a v6 and shod with solid winter tires did all right save for one time when I had to steer out of a fish tail.
Christmas was amazing. I don’t know if it was COVID, the season, something from the almighty or a combination of all three. No bickering over board games or slights felt, but a family glad to see each other.
The trip home was a lot better and I actually felt mentally rested. Had to clear 8” of snow off the driveway when we got back, but you know how it is. A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.
