Random Thoughts or Whatever

Two college students got their degrees in business , economy, math, etc., and decided to open a hardware store up in the Tennessee hills. They put all of their education to word, opened the store, and in a year and a half were broke. They sold what was left of the store to one of the local yokels and moved on.

Two years later, they were in the area and decided to see how bad the store was now. To their surprise, the store was twice as big, the parking lot was full, and customers were filling their carts. The old geezer who owned the place was sitting in a rocking chair out front smoking his corncob pipe. The two approached him.

"We have to ask - we did everything according to the book when opening this store, but went broke in 18 months. You buy it and turn it into a booming success. How did you do it?"

The owner replied, "I don't have no fancy school learnin' or no college degrees. I just buy something for $1 and sell it for $2. I happy with my 1% profit!"

Practical math, my neighbor and his buddy installing a new furnace for me circa 1985:
"Hey, how big should I cut this hole for the return duct?"
"Oh, 21 and some itty-bittys."
:)

Itty-bitty is Einstein's fudge factor. :)

Without mathematics how could we lie with statistics?

If someone's math looks fishy or you feel that it's trying to "snow" you — it prolly is.

;)

Those reminded me of an old department head I had years ago. I had told him about some fishy stuff going on with the new department management that had just taken over and he responded. "That goes to show you that figures don't lie, but liars can figure"

Random thought..
Why is it when I see women ( and some men ) standing with their hands on their hips their thumbs face forward? Just an observation. Carry on.

In Brisbane I'm currently paying $6.77AU for equivalent of 1 US Gallon ($1.79AU per litre), and that is the base unleaded we call 91, but I use 95 which costs more.

I'm not bothered at this stage, It's only a bit more than we paid previously.

My car has a 1.5L 4-cylinder engine, does the job in practical terms just as well as any V8 (I don't tow).

Some history from a Google search:

  • Duck Tape®: This is a specific, popular brand of duct tape.
  • Duct Tape: This is the generic, industry-standard name for the adhesive, cloth-backed tape.
  • History:The term "duck tape" originated in World War II when soldiers called it that because of its water-resistant properties—repelling water like a duck's back—and its cotton duck fabric base.
  • Modern Usage: It is now commonly called duct tape (often silvery-gray) for repairing and sealing

"Duct tape" is actually not very good on ducts. The dry air going through the ducts tends to dry out the resin holding the tape together, and it falls apart- especially in hot attics. It eventually just crumbles.

The metal foil tape (a.k.a "racers tape") is much better- there's a reason why it's pretty much the industry standard in the heating and air industry.

I used to use duct tape quite a bit, but rarely use it at all. Not only does it disintegrate over time- it shouldn't ever be used for electrical insulation, because it's not a good insulator, either.

If you have to use duct tape- like in zip ties- black is better, IME. Lasts longer. And it's also, better, when it's used in a place where it's not exposed to much moving air.

Regards,
Gordon.
