Yep. I didn't have time to do an audio test, but the power on test worked fine. Stable, correct rail voltages and no blown fuses. That's a positive sign at this point.
After a couple of days with family down in VA, I'll hook the rest of the Tandberg up and give it a proper audio test. Fingers crossed....

I had a Fluke 80xx something DMM before and I liked it, but then I saw the HP 3466A with its higher precision and I switched. The first HP was fun to calibrate and easy to use, so I got the matching counter. The counter came in a squared-off case that stacked better and that led me to the 3466B which is the same DMM but in a stackable squared-off case... so I bought two of those and gifted the portable aerodynamic-shaped non-stackable one to my dad. My brain says I need two voltmeters for some stuff and I just go along with that and continuously troll eBay.

two voltmeters is great when doing bias and offset on a unit. Hook em both up and dial it in instead of having to swap leads from one test point to another.
So, everything seems to be working well (except the broken tuner string).
It's dead quiet with an active, turned-down input.
You... you have to push the STEREO button in... to get stereo output? It seems like that's its function, but... that's weird, right? @jdurbin1 thats what the STEREO button does, right? If so, are we just hearing summed mono otherwise?
There is no... no AUX input. Two PHONO ins and two TAPE ins/outs (each with level control), but... no AUX?

Well lookout for those Onkyos then. The TX-4500 has three tape loops and No aux input. Sure does fool the folks that have an aux and no place to plug it in.
Yes, for normal use you want the Stereo button depressed. You can also run Mono R or Mono L which will feed both output channels with one or the other of the two input channels, but not sure why they included that. Maybe listening to the odd 78? Or possibly they had radio stations only broadcasting mono on one channel, no idea.
This receiver was designed in 1977/78, no sign of CD or any other mass-market aux input stereo source products at the time. It was replaced in the 80's by the 3080A which has a much more modern source selection: Phono x1, FM, AUX, CD, Tape 1 and DAT/VIDEO. But, if you wanted to run a couple of tape decks and a pair of turntables, this receiver was a macdaddy for the time.
Yeah, reversing NPN/PNP tends to blow fuses... even at the driver stage. I won't tell you why I knew that.

Ok, restringing is done and the sides are back on. The Tandberg sounds really, really quiet (i.e. low THD). I have no idea if this is normal for these receivers, if it comes from switching the power amp board to metal film resistors, or a combination of both... but it's nice and quiet. Not the inky darkness of the black hole that is a BillD-modded Carver C-1, but very quiet compared to many 70's receivers I've worked on.
That being said, putting the "case" back together and getting the sides tightened and back aligned so it is a sturdy unit again... wow, THAT was a learning experience.

It seems there are lots of choices in tuning string size. I measured what was in the unit before replacing it with something similar. Of course, a bit larger probably won't be a problem, wonder how much larger it can be before there is an issue? Unfortunately, spools of Dacron will do hundreds of tuners/receivers and I don't see a reason to have one of every size available for the next job.
Ive ordered a 30# and 40# spool. I'll report back when they arrive with which matches best.
