When you say "would be best" that can lead to a myriad of confusing replies. What's "best" for you fathers ears might not be best for others.

Will he be listening to music loudly or at low levels?

Are you looking for new or vintage?

The Sansui SP2500 were fairly efficient speakers meaning you don't need a lot of power(watts) to fill a reasonably sized room with sound.

Unfortunately its tough to make a recommendation on a receiver based on the limited information you have provided.

Are you looking for "vintage" gear, or are you interested in something newer ?

What kind of budget are you working with ?

What kind of music do you listen to ?

How loud do you listen ?

What size room are you listening in ?

Will you be using it for Home Theater duty ?

Do you listen to AM/FM, cd's, LP's, iPod or other streaming device ?
