Revitalizing AK

Have we confirmed that participation has fallen off?
I just had a look at the internet archive. AK was founded in 2002, correct?

In 2017, AK hit 10 million posts and 230,000 registered members. So, 15 years-ish to reach those numbers.

As of today, 7.5 years later, there are about 15.6 million posts and 355k registered members. If it keeps up, we should be on track to match or exceed those numbers from the first 15 years.

However, here's a Google Trends chart on popularity for the term "audiokarma" in searches.

Looks like, as far as Google searches are concerned, 2012-2013 was the "peak" of interest and has fallen off but leveled out since then.

The simplest answer is that audio as a hobby is dying on the vine. When people want music they open their phone and get streams.

I have never listened to music on a Phone or any portable player requiring ear buds.

We older folks created the technology that enables this form of listening. Rather than alienating those that use it, show them the alternatives that most of use and enjoy. Make a positive impression about life on AK.

I'm a very new member of AK (just joined today), so perhaps I can provide a bit of a younger new-to-the-hobby viewpoint. As someone recently starting from no audio equipment, it is daunting and often expensive to get into. New speakers are either something like a JBL/Bose bluetooth, or prohibitively expensive. Old speakers are increasingly difficult to find and often require some level of prior knowledge to get most out of them. For a lot of people, I would think that the convenience of some airpods and their phone far outweighs bulky, expensive, stationary, and (often) finicky setups. That said, vinyl is still huge, and I think a lot of crosley suitcase TT users will eventually desire an upgrade. AK is an incredible source of knowledge, and the people who would appreciate this forum (like me) will surely find it.

One more thing...

Today's communication world is image-driven and video-driven - not TEXT driven. Sure, we include pictures in many posts, but that's all secondary to the textual nature of a "forum." I wouldn't call AK "phone friendly," right?

I have been here for a while now so I'm going to make a couple of suggestions about ways to encourage people to stay here after they find the site:

Less of the "this is a Boys Club Only" attitude that is pretty strong amongst a subset of people here.

Stop bitching about young people and the way they listen. Streaming/headphones is great if you have to share accommodation with other people. A lot of younger people don't have the luxury of space to set up systems. See elliser 1 a couple of posts above

Ditch the "There's no good new music" attitude. It's wrong and you need to get out more.

That looks surprisingly (or not) like a bell curve.

The Times They Are A-Changing.

However - the current system I am listening to is this one:

Marantz 6300
Bang&Olufsen MMC20CL
Sansui 990DB
Rogers BBC monitors Rogers LS 5/9 (321A /321B)

The Bluetooth generation grew up with poor sounding music. They got used to it. They do not miss finest quality sound.

It is how it is.
