The B77 standard speed version (3.75 and 7.5 ips (9.52 and 19.05 cm/s)) is available as a half track or quarter track machine with NAB equalization.

Sounds like you have a half track model.

Look at the back of the machine where the power cord goes. There is usually a sticker with the track format.

Otherwise, look at the heads. You probably have a 1/2 track model.

A 4track, well, a 1/4 track deck is really what you want. I'd still go for a Revox B77. You just happened to get a 2track (1/2 track) version.

What's a good 4track machine to look for?

Yours! Heads can be changed in Revox machines, and you can change your 2- track configuration into a 4-track one. I bought a new set of heads (you need three of them: erase, recording and playback ones) from eBay for 150 $ last year (heads were NOS). You would need then to align the heads.

Thx for reply....sounds a bit complicated, for a not very clued up reel to reel owner .lol

That's not exactly a procedure for the novice, though....
Plus there are some changes on the boards to go from 1/2 to 1/4 track. Though it's pretty easy to just get the boards from the bay and plug them in. And, if you want to play back 3 3/4 ips tapes.....

I still say look for a good 1/4 track to start with. You can never have too many Revox decks. :thmbsp:

PM me I have a A-77 4 track Revox MkIV Dolby. Keep your 2 track, they make better recordings when the heads are aligned correctly. You are playing a 4 track tape on a 2 track machine.

I am looking for one of those B77 two-track machines, have some radio station reels of 70's radio shows that are recorded that way.

PM me, I have met a older guy in the UK with 80 or so Studer/Revox machines
that I get my BASF tape from. Shipping is expensive but he has really good equipment that he has completely gone thru and tested and played/recorded on for hours before he sells them. He may know of someone here in the "States" that can help you with finding a "Good" 2 track B-77. I wish I had a B-77 2 track but I have this A-77 that has been in the family for years.
Sound good enough for me. :-)
