RIP Ted Kennedy

RIP, Senator Kennedy. A great American.

I had a chance to hear him speak to a group a few years ago. His voice was literally booming when he spoke about current events and work to be done. And this at age 70+. I've never heard anything like it.

For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.

Definitely the end of an era; whether you liked his politics or not, you could tell he was a man who believed in what he did, and never backed down from his beliefs even when he found himself in the minority.

A different take than other rooms

Mine will be the 48th. post and all of them were civilized. Some folks were Kennedy fans, some weren't but all were civil and respectful. I can't say the same for a similar room which disrespected the Senator first thing this morning.

I wrote a terse resignation from that room, not because they might disagree with my sentiments but for the crude language used and the lack of respect shown a man not four hours dead.

Freedom of speech gives us the right to say anything that comes into our minds but it also allows us the choice to temper that right with some self-control and feelings for those who might disagree.

Reading your responses to this subject tends to make me feel much more at home among folks who go the extra mile to try not to offend others.

And when you stop and think about it, for the most part, the tone of civility that we see in this thread exists in almost all threads on AK. It's rare that I've seen anything obnoxious on here, and it's usually corrected by the people involved in the thread. It's a sentiment I believe reflected in our political processes.

Which is cool in my book.

John and Robert paid for this with their lives. And now Ted is reunited with them
once again.

I wish everyone, particularly me, would show the respect for people when they're alive that we tend to show when they die. In fact, that's not a bad thought to keep in the back of my mind. I've said some terrible things about political figures I dissagree with. How would I feel about those statements on the day of their death?

High risk doesn't even do it justice...he was flying, essentially, a B-17 (or was it a B-24?) loaded with explosives that would be flown into a target by remote control after the pilot (Kennedy, who was needed to get the plane off the ground), bailed out. The plane blew up mid-air before he was able to bail out.

As a Senator's son, that's a pretty brave thing to undertake!

I believe it was a B-17, and as I understand it, he volunteered for the mission.

It hasn't been mentioned much, but Ted also served in the military in his younger days.
