Sansui Product History: Amplifiers 1967-2000

Some pictures from the Sansui HiFi component series book.
Here you can see the release year according Sansui and some models next to/ on top of eachother to give a good idea from the design.

You can see here how different the AU-888 is from the AU-777/999 and AU-9500.
Also it is interesting to see that the AU-555A, AU-505 and AU-101 are not seen in this history or on Yahoo-auction-japan. Although there is an AU-2000 that looks like a silver AU-505 (not in this book, but you can see them in Japan).
Some really interesting models. Especially the QA-6000 in the design of the AU-7700.

Very cool and informative literature!

While researching parts I found some timeline related clues:

The boards in the AU-7700 are named F-2092 to F-2097. ( edit- I just spotted F-2472, F-2473 in there too )

The AU-6600 has 2 derivative boards named F-2092A, F-2097A. Then it has F-2098, F-2099 continuing on from the F-2097 in the AU-7700.

The rest of the AU-6600 boards are numbered F-24xx.

So it would appear the AU-7700 was developed first.

Tracking which boards were used in which units could be useful to help figure out production timelines.

Hi,

There is two documents in the Sansui section of the AK Digital Docs, one is circuit boards - where used, and the other is circuit boards used by model. Not sure how up to date these are and how much of the later JDM product is represented.

Cheers
John

Something else I discovered: the 8080db/9090db both have a TU-7900 built into them, for their tuner section.

F-2549 is listed as the AM FM tuner circuit board

F-1519 is listed as the front end pack

That's the guts of a TU-7900 minus the power supply. And the F-2550 multipath circuit board.

Although there may be some component changes?

I wonder if that's the reason the tuner power supply runs so hot in the 8080/9090db? Whatever Sansui did to power the tuner was a compromise, compared to the full power supply in a TU-7900?

People have been modding 8080/9090db's with heatsinks & moving the resistors over to the chassis for better cooling

OK I think I captured all of the new contributions - since 11/04/22. Let me know if there is anything missing.

@Peter lye the website History and Chronology of SANSUI Amplifiers is a fantastic resource and picks up pretty much where the list current stops - thanks!

@GrisPato and others what do you think about design evolution divisions - what and where in the chronology?

RE @GrisPato earlier post -

"For example:
I would call first generation SS:
AU-777
AU-222
AU-555
AU-999

Second generation:
AU-666
AU-888

The following models are like a mix between first and second ( to be honest this is also applying to the AU-999) Cap coupled and quasi complementary outputs with the cosmetic design of the DC coupled circuit.
( For the AU-999 the opposite except the quasi complementary outputs).

AU-555A
AU-505
AU-101

But, I can live with calling all these models first generation. I would prefer to have a difference between quasi/ full complementary.

After this come the AU-x500 models
As far as I know this was a small line up.
AU-6500
AU-7500
AU-8500
AU-9500
There circuit design develops through the AU-5500/7700 and AU-2900/7900.
Here the cosmetic design is going back to the AU-777 with a twist.
Is this second generation?
The cosmetic design changes with the AU-5500-7700 through the AU-2900-7900, circuit is basically the same.
For me this is at least third generation.
Then it gets easy to the next generation ( fourth?), AU-607/707, different cosmetic design, layout and circuit.
For me the AU-D607/707/907/X1/907LIMITED belong to the same generation, but not to the AU-607/707, so fifth generation.
Why? In the AU-607/707 only dual-jfet differential in the output stage, no diamond differential, no high speed circuit and transistors in the Darlington stage.
I am curious what other people think of this generation division!"

Thanks for posting that. Great read and I learned a lot, particularly the paragraph in the middle column of page 54 about the "feedforward" technique and that Sansui was the only manufacturer implementing it at the time of this article. Now I'll be on the hunt for a Sansui FF amp!

That was a great article. Found reference to in an amplifier design book. I've also been spending some time on Hi-Fi Engine browsing the Sansui documents - that place is a gold mine!

Picking up where the product history list left off, last October. Solid State Integrated amplifiers, 1978+.

It is pretty clear Sansui did not stop innovating when the Golden Era and Yen challenges closed that Hi-Fi chapter, internationally. The looks may have changed, but the drive for Sansui certainly looked strong in Japan through the late 90's! There are folks here with greater awareness of this period. And this is a very complicated Sansui product period to chart. Please comment, contribute and correct! Aiming for accuracy.

Once the list is cleaned up and near or at accuracy I would like to document the important topology step changes for the entire SS Integrated and Separate list, 1967-1999.

X Balanced

Thanks @Qsiris Here

The 'alpha' name was applied to x-balanced models from 1986 onward and reflects an evolution of the original x-balanced circuitry.
Thanks @pete_mac

L Extra - first use of nonmagnetic transistors, all later versions had these
DR and later - upgraded circuitry and components
XR and later - last circuitry upgrade (hyper speed forward)

Making progress on the 1978-1999 group. I think I have captured every integrated amplifier for this period. Working on adding circuit/branding classifications. And adding hyperlinks to individual piece specs.

I've been gleaning everything I can related to the development of this period. This thread Here with posts by @fojica and conversation with the some other pros and enthusiasts here offer very thorough technical detail.

The plan is to have a complete chronological list of all Sansui solid state integrated amplifiers (and separates) from the 1967 AU-777 20 watts to the 1999 AU-a607 MOS Limited 50 watts with classification by significant steps in topology.

Please comment or correct anything here!

Thanks @Qsiris Here

The 'alpha' name was applied to x-balanced models from 1986 onward and reflects an evolution of the original x-balanced circuitry.

There are the A-a77 and A-a99; they have tone controls instead of the presence control found on the A-a7 and A-a9 models.

Got it. Thanks! And noticed I missed the A-a7 on the first pass too. Made the additions.

Also, having trouble finding wattage for these A-a7/a9/a77/a99? Do you know? I can investigate more later, if not.

Love the clean looks of the A-a7/a9/a77/a99!
