Schiit Buf

I got a Schiit Buf a couple days ago and it's been working nonstop. It is between Modi 3+ and GX80ES which is daisy chained to 2 more amps. What I know is the Buf does not make it worse. My system sounds great. Hard to imagine it could be better. Not sure at this point what the Buf does. The system sounds so nice and I am lazy so haven't done any AB testing. When I get bored I'll screw it up.

The manual is brief. It does not say for the power switch what is on or off - up or down. It just says you should turn it on. I am assuming up is on. The tube is glowing.

I have a GE 5 star 5670 tube. Used to be in a Maverick DAC. Does anybody know if this is a direct replacement?

Look on the back and you will see a vertical line like this…….I……That is the up and on position. Down you will see this….. o….. that is off. A 5670 is NOT a direct replacement. It is a direct replacement for a 6N3P but not the 6N1P that comes with the BUF. The stock tube is excellent. Use it.

For a 5670, you'll need an adapter. TubeDepot sells one that should work. I have one on order, but it's taking forever to get here...! I have a leftover GE JAN5670W from a Maverick too, that I want to try as soon as the adapter arrives.

Also, listening to Buf this morning, after I swapped in a Rad/Tel 6SN7 tube (again, with the appropriate adapter). A more relaxed presentation; perhaps not as compressed (hyped) sounding as the stock 6N1P tube. Less pronounced midbass as well, but more natural with the 6SN7. A little less low level detail, which I do like in the stock tube. I might try another 6SN7, but I admit, the excitement and the dynamics of the 6N1P tube has been Fun, which is what the Buf is all about...! :D

I assume people will do tube rolling with the Buf. I just happen to have a 5670 which is well regarded. I don't think my question is out of line. The 6N1P tube is working fine sounds great and I am using it. The tube has a finite life so I am thinking in a year I will need a replacement. If folks have experience with other tubes we should hear about it.

You can eventually purchase the adapter that @StimpyWan mentioned and you’ll be good to go. Yes, the 5670 is a fine tube. I sometimes use one in my Schiit Vali 2++.

If the tube Schiit sent with your BUF has a star on it ("Voshkod Rocket") there are not many that sound better and last longer than those...

The Reflektor's sound good too. Ive used the Reflektor 6N1P-EV's and and I'm using a Reflektor 6N3P-EV in a single ended EL34 amp I recently built it sounds good. The 6N1's and 6N2's have a screen between the two triodes inside connected to pins 9 that should be grounded. The Russians added those to better shield the two triodes from cross talk. If pins 9 isn't grounded, a small amount of voltage may build up and cause pops. So far I haven't had this happen. Pin 9 isn't grounded in mine. The sockets are on a PCB. But it would be easy enough to add a ground jumper if I ever hear a pop.

A bit off the Schiit Buf topic if I may, but still talking about something tubes that gets inserted in between the preamp and amp.

Fisher K-10 SpaceXpander. I have a working unit that I power up every few months to keep the ancient electrolytics formed. Not in regular rotation because it's just a fun thing. Crazy product from before I learned to read.

Edit: I've never tried it with solid state amps. Not sure about impedances and things.

Preamp signal tubes can last thousands of hours, resulting in years of use. The Buf tube will be good for ages. If it still sounds good, in a year, I wouldn't worry. That said, power tubes, in a tube amplifier, do have a much shorter lifespan. Those do require more frequent changes.

I'm guessing it will work well with many SS pieces of gear. The small preamp I have with a SS output worked great with any of the SS amps I plugged it into.

Anyone using anything other than the stock tube in the Buf? I looked at a JJ E88CC tube for about $30 shipped, not sure how different it would be from the tube that comes with the Buf...?

I tried a vintage, tested 6DJ8 that I already had in house and couldn't hear a difference, but I can't claim two-sigma ears.
