Schiit Fans ?

My buddy came over today with some albums to play (Alice In Chains Jar of Flies / Tom Petty Echo) because he has a home theater setup with some Emotiva Amps with Klipsch speakers and he doesn't like the sound when trying to play two channel stereo.

He commented that the Tyrs with the Freya+ in tube mode sounds "buttery" and so much better than my Parasound A21+ amps, which he always thought were too bright. He can still hear above 15 khz, and I top out around 12 Khz, so I could never hear the brightness that he did.

I agree that the Tyrs are smooth and just a bit warm, so I guess "buttery" is a good way to describe that sound.

Schiit is having a big sale on the Ragnarock 2 for $999. Used ones go for at least $1500.

I wonder what new piece of equipment is going to show up next month ! It seems as though when they fire sale something, a new product is on the way... maybe a new integrated amp with TUBES ???

I'm keeping my eyes peeled for the release of Skoll in silver, but if they make a tube powered integrated amp I'd snatch one up for the office in a heart beat :D

In the Head-Fi thread Jason said it was simply that they had a ton of them on the shelf because they had over ordered parts when the tube supply was down to a trickle. He said that there are no plans to make a new version but, you never know. I know that the Freya + is still one of their best sellers. They do have a couple of 'secret projects' coming out, at least one this summer. He keeps saying no tube speaker amps are coming.

What are they going to do with the Saga? Are we going to know before July? It was a customer suggestion I believe Jason mentioned. Does that person get a free pair? Saga is an easy to recognize step up in sound quality for many (mid, mid hi fi) users. The small footprint is another advantage of Saga. Schiit kills solid state in the Kara. I see good things on the horizon for Saga.

The Schiit website shows the Ragnarok on the LAST CALL list, which generally means when the parts are used up they won't make anymore of them, so (IMO) something new is due... time will tell

He mentioned no tube in the next Saga.

So today I was playing some Zeppelin through my streamer with the Freya+ in tube mode with a quad of the new Tong-Sol 6SN7GBT tubes... in 50 years I have never heard When the Levee Breaks sound as rich and powerful as it did today- the harmonica was right in the middle of my living room and so ALIVE that it gave me goosebumps. These freakin' TYR amps are incredible!

Well I have to say I'm not a fan, and I haven't even had a chance to hear their products yet.
Ordered a pre and a phono pre March 2nd. Said ships in 1 to 3days and I'm usually very careful about ordering in stock products. 10 days later I'm emailing them "hey where's my stuff?". First email went unanswered, then the 2nd round was "Oh, those don't ship until April 12." That's been pushed back to April 26, and the phono pre just says 3-5weeks in perpetuity.
I think I'll just be cancelling my order. Really disappointed. Their products are in my budget with the features I wanted. But after such a fiasco, I just don't want them anymore.

Their less expensive equipment is always in short supply as they sell out a batch very quickly... they always have the pricey stuff on hand (BTW: the $399 Skoll sounds far superior to the $150 Mani and no DIP switches to fool with)

I can see how that would be frustrating (especially if they charge your credit card before they ship - can't remember). Hang in there. Schiit is worth a bit of a wait.
Most businesses put a HOLD for the amount on your card, but don't complete the transaction and actually charge you until it ships

Had a scare with the Freya+ on Tuesday... I was changing out speaker cables and rearranging power cords and when I got done I was getting barely any sound out of the right channel in all three modes. Then the mute and active mode lights illuminated at the same time, so I shut it off and restarted it and got pops out of the right speaker, so I shut it down completely and pulled the power cord. I rechecked everything (even swapped amps left to right and swapped cables, etc) and still got very weak sound from the right channel. I removed it from the system and put my Parasound P6 preamp in in its place and everything worked as it should, so I was pretty sure the Freya +had taken a Schiit and I was ready to send it back to them for repair.

I let the Freya+ sit overnight, and decided to try it one more time because while the Parasound P6 preamp worked perfectly, the sound was dull and lifeless compared to the Freya+. I swapped them out and once again got very weak sound from the right channel. This time I realized the rear buffer stage tube (controls the right channel) was not getting hot-aka inoperative- so I pulled out the socket saver and put in a different one (I have two sets of ceramic socket savers, one set is 'loose" the other very tight) and magic- the sound was back ! I checked the problematic socket saver with my ohmmeter and it check out fine, but I guess it just did not hold the tubes tightly enough. The "loose" socket savers were replaced with the tight ones and I let it play all day, which it did without a glitch.

The moral of the story is, if stuff is working fine, don't mess around with it !

The only piece of Schiit gear that I have is their basic low cost external DAC for my CD changer, it's connected with a Toslink cable and the sound quality is definitely improved.
