Schiit Fans ?

Jason Stoddard posted today that the Gungnir 2 is just about ready for production. it will be a MB application, a delta sigma coming later.

Just picked up a Kara preamp this past week from the Schiit clearance section, replaces a Chinese tube preamp. Very happy with it so far.
I'm torn between choosing the Kara or another Freya+ for my office system (to replace my Parasound P6). I do have a boat load of 6SN7 tubes, but I like the newer high voltage rail design of the Kara...

I'd picked up the original Bifrost 2 last winter and just got the 2/64 card last night. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much and was fully prepared to return it, but playing Dominique Fils-Amié's "Nameless" last night, the hair stood up on the back of my neck. The staging and separation were noticeably improved.

I wonder if anyone has compared that new phono preamp they have with the Mani 2? Not that I'm really itching to upgrade from my Mani 2 (it sounds very good!), but if I thought that there was likely to be a big improvement, I would consider this new, more expensive one. It still seems cheap compared to lots of the alternatives...

I had the Mani 2 prior to purchasing the Skoll. My take is there is a considerable difference between the two, perhaps mores than the difference between the Modi 3+ and the Bifrost 2 (but not 2/64), especially using a high output moving coil cartridge, where the output is slightly lower than that of MM carts. The remote offers one of the biggest advantages, allowing you to sit in your listening position and make adjustments to gain, loading and rumble filters to dial in the sound definitively. I do not regret the purchase at all.

Duly noted... I do actually have a high output MC cart on my table. I'll be saving up my pennies. Once I have that thing and the Bifrost 2/64 thing in my system I'm going to be done with upgrades... or at least that's what I'll be telling myself!

The Schiit phono preamps seem like a particularly nice way to go, the way that I see it, in that they have so much adjustability. Far more expensive options often don't seem to be as adjustable, so they're presumably better matched to very specific cartriges, which I guess is OK, but then if you change your cart to something that falls outside of the range of the thing, you're probably going to want a new phono preamp...

I now have two Skolls... fantastic little machines ! My only issue with Schiit equipment is the ridiculously tiny feet (not even 1/4" high) I've replaced all the feet with 5/8" or taller feet to help with heat. My Freya+ is the only one that actually gets hot, and it is now up on 1 1/4" tall cones:

They are coming out with Stjarna, a tubed phono pre in a couple of months, I believe. Surely more expensive.

Cool... Maybe when that happens folks will be dumping their Skoll ones to upgrade to this thing and I can then find a cheap copy of the Skoll! I've certainly heard some amazing sounding tube, gear, I'm just not personally inclined to go in that direction. Owning solid state stuff just seems simpler and more convenient...

Besides the two Skolls, I also have a Pro-Ject Tube Box DS2 that uses two 12AX7 tubes - it sounds really nice with either my Freya+ or Parasound P6 preamps. It is currently in the office running the two tables I have in there:

I still run an original Magni (sometimes called the "OG Magni" or "Magni 1") in addition to also running the new Magni Unity.

Forget about the cost. These could easily cost 5 times more for the level of quality, finishing, and sound that they deliver. Especially the new one with DAC which uses ESS 9018 chipset + has galvanically isolated USB input.

This firm offers top-tier performance for pennies.

Is it true that the subsonic filter is available/working only for the balanced XLR outputs?
Strait from the owners manual:

Note: LF filter is only enabled on the balanced XLR outputs.

Note2: LF filter is selected via the remote. Alternately,
if the remote isn’t handy or is in your parrot/dog/
cat’s stomach, you can press and hold (4) to toggle
it on and off.

You could buy a set of XLR cable ends that accept RCA cables on the other end - that might fool it into working... maybe ???? I put a set on the end of my turntable cables and plugged those into the XLR input and they work fine, not sure about going the other way with outputs though.

I see they updated the manual to 1.4. In the 1.2 version I have this part is missing.
Too bad, will wait for possible mk2 Skoll, maybe they will fix this along with adding more gain options for MM, like 38, 42 and 45db.

I took the Freya+ completely apart this afternoon and drilled a boat load of 1/4" holes in the bottom as that is where it is always the hottest. I didn't have time to give it more than a half hour test, but it felt quite a bit cooler down there than usual.

Note: when you put it back together be careful not to push the top cover all the way back, especially when tightening the nut on the volume control--the three buttons were stuck all the way in (I could not press them) and the unit warm up light flashed continually without operating. I loosened the nut and slid the cover out about 1/32" inch so that the buttons were able to be pushed in and return out like they should. All is good now.
Tip: hold the buttons in place with pieces of Scotch tape on the OUTSIDE of the case to hold them in position when putting the top back on.
