Home made speaker pics
Just posting this for fun.
Here are some shots of speakers I built years ago.
The floor standing speakers are ones I made when I was 20 (so 33 years ago):tears:
They have Studio Lab guts. 2x10 inch woofers, 4 inch mid and 2x1 inch Philips dome tweeters (one textile and one poly, didn't know which would be better so I used one of each). The original Studio Lab tweeters sucked so I pitched them. The walls extend to the floor to act as stands and are angled up slightly to aim the speakers more towards the listener. They have 1.5 inch thick walls, weigh 110 pounds each and have 360 screws holding the pair together (along with plenty of glue). They are solid buggers. Pink Floyd CD on top for scale. They still sound great and the foam is still good after all these years. They spent half their life stored in various basements because after I got married for the first time....well...wives don't really understand this stuff do they.
The smaller ones I built about 25 years ago from wood left over from the Studio Lab project (same pine veneer particle board on the face). 75 pound golden retriever "Brinkley" in pic for scale. I built them to use as car speakers in my new (then) 5 liter Mustang Cobra. 8 inch Philips woofers and Philips 1 inch textile dome tweeters. The grills are expanded metal to protect them from flying projectiles. Keep in mind these were built to go in the back of a Mustang with a 302 cu in V8.
I'm presently using them as a home entertainment system and have them all hooked up to a JVC super A-X5 amp (at the moment, but soon to be a Marantz 2270).

Are those cabinets solid pine? Or Pine veneer?? They sure look nice!

They are pine veneer on particle board. Keep in mind these were built 33 years ago and I was 20 at the time. I don't think MDF wasn't invented yet (or at least I'd never heard of it back then) and being 20 I don't think I could have afforded anything more exotic. Plus pine was cool in the '70's

Wow! I considered a 2 piece cab like that, but I thought the waveguide needed to be closer to the woofer to perform properly.
Those look awesome.

I think the pine looks great!! Not your average walnut or oak!

I designed these speakers when I was 10 and built them with my dad. They sound OK but they were good enough for a 10 year old.
These are ones I designed when I was 12, and were the best sounding speakers I've made... They are ported in the back.
I'd like to rebuild them into plywood enclosures because the particle board is already showing signs of decomposition.

Suggestion, laminate them with veneer. While plywood has certainly improved, veneer over the particle board will be acoustically better and you won't have to start totally from scratch. Plus you'll gain some veneering expertise at the same time.
And yes the assumption is they sound good now and won't necessarily benefit from a complete new box.

1. Made sure another pair of cabinets didn't go to the land fill.
2. Used different drivers from the original
3. Used different xover entirely
4. Built midrange enclosures with appropriate volume for mid used.
5. Enlarged the usable "volume" for the woofer for better bottom end.
And they didn't turn out half bad, looking, and sound better than the factory system did. Well for the most part, still need some tweaks.

Cubostein floor monitors
Built some Cubo 12s a while back with some woofers from some Nady Pro 112 cabs I had sitting around.They are a hybrid bass horn design.Worked pretty well but never really blended well with my other stuff.Was running them off a active crossover along with other stuff,but since then went with some homebrew passives & these were just sitting.
Brought home a pair of MCS 3 way speakers needing refoaming, cabinets moldy.But they were only 10 cents & guy was gonna burn em so I had to.
Pulled them apart & found a very interesting midrange(should got pics looks like a ADS type maybe). Crossover was decent looking with 3 inductors & I noticed it crossed about 350hz on bottom end......hmmmmm.
I first just proped the mids & tweeters on top the Cubos & hooked them up to my Scott 375r receiver. Sounded pretty good- the bass is very different-distinct-likable to me the more I listen.
Added a angled front panel to house mid & tweeter.
Didnt know what to do with the crossovers so they are temp. attached to the side of the cabs.They had a 3 position switch -2db 0 +2db, I just took it out & ran the +2db.
Homebrewing can be some fun stuff:yes:
