Show Us Your Sonys!!!

But Patrick66 those AMP66ES do not fit with that sofa at all! You better put them back in the boxes and ship them 1.951 km north :)

Nice find :thmbsp:

Got my PS-X800 today. The packing job was simply stellar and the table survived the trip from the Netherlands to Belgium without a problem. TT was packed in its original box, with all the original parts to support it (foams, screws, plastic bags etc), and then double boxed into another box with styrofoam and all that.

For a 24 year old turntable (came with the original receipt) this thing looks almost brandnew, everything works as slick and smooth as one would expect.

After setting it up carefully, installing the cartridge (Denon DL 301 II), connecting to the rest of my setup, I turned it on and spun some Fleetwood Mac.

Wow! I thought my PS-X75 sounded good, but this is still something else. Especially the bass was much tighter and more extended.

Been playing records all afternoon :music:

Moving my PS-X75 to my study setup, so now I can play records in the two parts of the house where I reside most. :)

Only thing is that it's slightly too big for my (cheapo) rack, so will have to get a decent rack one of these days.

Great photos Stoffie.
The better quality Linear Tracking Japanese turntables were very good sounding.
There are a lot of people who object with arguments to the effect of "There's got to be noise from the motor" and "The arm must wiggle it's way across the record".
Then one puts one of these turntables in a good system with a good quality cartridge, and goes "Wow!"
It is a surprise.
Welcome to the world of the Linear Tracker. :D
If your TT weighs less than 25Kg,I'd recommend the SAP Relaxa 3+ mag/lev platform(big recommendation),and the Boston Audio Carbon/Graphite mat(essential recommendation).
In the mean time enjoy your new Sony, and your wonderful system. :thmbsp:

Yes, well said, uneducated people don't know that arms like the Pioneer PLL1000 used a linear motor driven via an analogue feedback system to give virtually instant, noiseless and vibration less arm movement. I'm not sure how the Yamahas did it, but probably along the same lines. I must admit, I have a problem with the cheap linear trackers that used cassette deck motors, a worm drive gear box and dial cord tied to the arm which ran along a greased rail- not ideal. Some decoupled the motor with belts, as far a I know Sony used a linear on its top model as did Yamaha I think. If the arm is completely free with the power off- its a linear motor.

Thanks guys. Really rediscovering vinyl as of late, and this great TT can only help with that :)

Thanks for the recommendations Theophile, I will keep it in mind, once my bankaccount has recovered :D

Attached some measurements on the TA-8650 I promised to send. They're from a magazine called "Tekniikan Maailma", issue 15/1977. Sorry for the poor quality, took the pics with a digital camera

Interesting Samuel! Long time no see :nono: :D

Too bad my Finnish isn't exactly my forte. How do they rate the unit in the review ?

Got myself a nice little Sony ST-J75 tuner on Ebay today for 17 bucks, that was a steal! This one concludes the setup for the study, for now. Buying spree is over

Stoffie, yeah..don't get to come over at the forum that often.. but it's great to see this thread growing! You guys have some really interesting equipment.

Anyway, the magazine gave the Sony pretty good review. Soundwise they considered it on par with a Marantz 1??0, can't remember the model number as i don't have the magazine here, but it was one of the bigger amps. Actually the only thing they really complained about was the slightly high DIM distortion. In the same review were also some receivers, at least Yamaha CR-600, Pioneer SX-750, B&O 4400 and Quad power amp.

Hey guys,

your new stuff is really looking damn good.

I'm personally also a little reserved against tangential players, but mostly because the late players didn´t have the opportunity to put in a standard cartridge, but the PS-X800 is an exception, because it accepts an ordinary headshell and a wide range of pickups.

The ST-J75 belongs to Sony's best tuners, but some people in the U.S. reported, that it has some strange muting behaviour at strong bass beats. Stoffie, did you see such effects on your (European) version ?

The DIM-30/100 plots of the TA-8650 are indeed interesting and show, that above 40W something very strange happens. But I´m still pretty sure, that at normal listening levels, with normal music material nothing should be noticeable.

No post without pictures. Some units are still missing in the new racks, but please take a look !

Indeed Mirko, man... I knew you had a lot, but this really blows my mind... talk about redundancy :D

Can't comment on the tuner yet, it still has to arrive. Will revert with comments when it's here.

Just a quick hello with my ST-A7B :)

Mirko - Did you pick up those two TA-N7s on eBay last week? An amazing collection.:thmbsp:

Axel - That is stunning. How does it sound?

Kristof - Have some good info on the ST-J75, but can't find what I've done with your e-mail address. Please PM me and I'll send along. A very quiet tuner and excellent match for the TA-E/B86 pair. The bass item that Mirko mentions is a simple adjustment if your unit suffers from same (I have four of these and none do). Believe the details are listed in the TIC under the ST-S555ES tuner. Same with both.

Glenn, those N7's are still on ebay at the moment, wonder how much that UK one will go for... I'm confident it will be way more than what I can spend (like 20 bucks or so at the moment, hehe). The TA-E88B's from the same seller (also mint) went both for more than 500€.

Looking at those pics Mirko posted again, I am mesmerized... a fortune in VFET's alone on that first pic... (Wega 4810, TA-4650, TA-5650, TA-8650, TA-E7B, another Wega 4810, Yamaha C-1, TAN-5550, TAN-8550, and Yamaha UC-1)

Can't make out everything on the second pic, but I see a ST-5000, STR-6060, two ST-5950's ?, 2 TAE-8450's, another TAN-8550, ST-A6B, 2 ST-A7B's, TA-E7B, TA-F6B, TA-5650, TA-4650, some WEGA tuner, ESPRIT SE-P900, ST-J88B, TA-E88B, TA-E86B, Wega Lab Zero pre without base, Wega Lab Zero tuner, Wega Lab Zero pre, TA-2650 ?, can't make out most of the stuff underneath and more to the right because the pic is too small and the light is wrong, but I still see a TA-F80 or two, TA-E901 ESPRIT, TA-N901 ESPRIT, some more TA-5650's, a ST-5950 ?

Not counting the stuff you are not showing, and the stuff you have in your setup... (TA-E900, Wega Lab Zero tuner, PS-8750, TA-N7B, Yamaha B-1 and B-2, SCD-777ES...)

Man I could keep going, one has to wonder how much money you have invested in this stuff, you could start your own vintage store... :D Or join efforts with some forum members and open a Sony vintage museum!

Btw, prices on vintage gear seem to be going up and up and up, ESPRIT TA-D900 crossover went for 675€... gasp...

:drool:Gobsmacked! More Sony's than the Sony pro dealership I worked for in the 80's ever had on the shelves!! Do you ever run them Mirko?
