Show Us Your Sonys!!!

I'd be interested in a wooden case for the 6060FW, or rather veneered MDF.

Walnut is a classic look but dark red mahogany is my favorite.

Of course, if you take a close look at Axel's TVK site, you'll see that there are a number of cheap Sony receivers that share the same case spec. It might be cheaper (especially if local pickup) to buy a cheapo just for the case????

It's good to see that there actually are some Sony fans on AK. My impression was that people thought of it as over-priced and under-performing. Which hasn't been my experience. Any Sony gear I've used both performed and lasted very well. I was in high school when the Walkman was the new IPod of its day, and Sony was never bested in the portable tunes arena, as much as I abused mine it just kept going.

Here's a pic of my previously mentioned WM-D6:
WM-D6.jpg

I also had a radio/cassette version that I rode out on my parents' orchard farm on a 3-wheel ATV back in the 80's, kicking up dust and bouncing all over the place. The abuse never phased it. The cassette player did eventually break down some time in the 90's but the radio works to this day. My WM-D6 is still plugging along, no serious problems.

I didn't see a STR-V6 so far (I might have missed it). Here's mine. The dial is also supposed to be green but I can't seem to locate those blue-coated bulbs.

For bulbs, try AK member dgwojo. He's the 'bulbman' around here. Nice looking receivers.

Three emails to keep me posted on the shipping process and it's on it's way but I'll be surprised to see it before January because of the seasonal rush. I'm not sure what to make of this guy's knowledge, but he did specifically tell me the tuner comes in in stereo and does claim some bench experience. I didn't ask about the tuning meter.

Sent you a PM Glenn.

I'll keep you posted Whitehall. I'm going to dig around a bit and see if I can find any useful pictures of the 6060 sleeve case Brian mentioned and I'll have to wait to see what the configuration is when mine arrives.

Absolon, where are you located?
The fact that the seller is keeping you posted is a good sign. He was fast to respond to my questions. I have a sleeve case from 1. Bought the unit suspecting it was not as represented but figured the case was worth the price. I think it is the same as the 1 for the 6120. The case on the 6120 is supposed to be in excellent condition but if not then a 3rd stop for the unit before coming hoome will be to Merrylander and he then will have a template for the case. If the case is good an thinking of sending this sleeve to him for restoring so again he would have a template. If you want, once I find out the condition of the 6120 case and determine that this case needs to go down, I could send it to you and you then could forward it to Merrylander if you want to make your own.

Here's what I've gleaned from TVK:

STR-6200F/6120 - TAC6

STR-6045/ST-5000F - TAC1

STC-7000 - TAC14N

STR-6060FW - TAC5E

At one time I had a more extensive list. Perhaps I can recreate it and post it here.

Thanks for the offer Brian. I'm on the wet west coast, commonly known amongst you more serious eastern types as the land of the lotus eaters, also as Canada's California. I shouldn't have any trouble working to the receiver itself but if you could answer a couple of questions it would be helpful. Are there feet on the bottom of the sleeve? Any points of attachment other than the side screws? I'm guessing the top and sides are 3/8" thick. Is that so, and is the bottom the same thickness? Sleeve construction should actually be a bit easier than the three piece as tolerances are less critical to making the construction solid. I've been considering solid wood construction as an alternative to veneer. I'd have much better dimensional control of the stock used, a much broader range of woods to choose from, and best of all would avoid much of the time consuming detail work associated with veneer.

The sleeve attaches via the feet. Same location, just longer to get through the wood. Top and bottom are 7/16" the sides are cut to extend past the faceplate edge while the top and botton butt up against the back side of the faceplate. Bottom has cutout leaving only about 2 1/2" on each side and 3" front and back and there is a vent on the top covering about the same area as the vents on the metal cover. The metal cover stays in place and the sleeve slides over and then the feet remount securing the sleeve and baseplate.

The screws on the side securing the metal cover are used on the 3-piece design and the feet are not the securing points. I do like the cut slots on the wood for the 6045 better than the metal vents used on the sleeve. If I were making a wood case or having 1 made, I think I'd prefer the sleeve but designed so the entire faceplate recesses into the wood for less chance of metal edge damage. Did not realize your are in B.C. If need be I can drop it in a box and mail it to you so you can see it.

Thanks Brian, from your description I can manage the details without seeing the sleeve and I'll be able to pull the dimensions when mine arrives. I've seen pictures of the slotted vents and agree they are more attractive. Shouldn't be too difficult to manage.

This one is not so common ... A Wega R4110 ( actually a black SD 6800 !) made for european market. Hope Axel may give more info on that one. A beauty nevertheless, quite powerful and prefect sound ...

Jérôme,

I still am after a Wega catalog displaying the '75/78 Sony rebadges - Wega brochures are quite rare unfortunately :(

As decent as it sounds after rebelting it, there's no way I'm polluting this thread with a pic of my BPC dual well cassette deck. There are far better out there than this thing. Just for the record, that is.
Tom
EDIT: removed from system 4/24/14 due to rotted belts. Again! :gigglemad

Remember the experience he had witht he Philips power amp. The first 1 convinced him not to do the 2nd 1.

My tech called today with the diagnosis on the 6060FW's tuner problem. My guess was close - I thought that one of the diodes downsteam of the multiplexer transformer was open or otherwise bad.

The tech said that he found the transformer open. Sony no longer supplies the replacement part so he is going to see if he can scrounge an equivalent replacement part. He also said he tried going around the 19 kHz transformer with a new coupling cap and did get some stereo action but it was not up to snuff.

I gave him a go-ahead to find and install a replacement transformer and told him I had some buddies who might be interested in additional units (here me, Brian?)

Otherwise, the amplifier sections were A-OK so if the tuner section is inoperable, it will do duty as an integrated amp.
