Show Us Your Sonys!!!

I think I got lucky!

The 6060FW arrived - got them to open the post office a day early so I could pick it up. :D

It appears in good shape, fairly unmarked except for a bit of corrosion inside but does need a cleaning. I hooked it into a pair of Ohm Model Ls in my workshop system and hooked up a temporary dipole to test it. Preliminary listening suggests it is everything Brian and Whitehall indicated it would be, a very nice sounding unit and a great bargain at the price.

There are no indicator lights or dial illumination functioning except the tuning meter light. The tuning meter works, muting is functional, sensitivity is very good even with the dipole in tough conditions and the dial reads accurately. Best of all, the stereo/mono switch toggles the soundstage open and closed when I am tuned to the CBC, a station I can usually get in stereo even when I can't pick up others in stereo :thmbsp: . Haven't tried the phono or tape inputs yet but a Pat Metheny CD through the AUX sounded excellent, clean and crisp and detailed. Controls are dead quiet as is the unit with no input and also between CD tracks.

The build quality isn't up to the 5000F but it is equivalent to the 2000F and 3200f and exceeds anything else I've had through my hands.

I haven't checked the bias yet, waiting for the service manual for the precise procedure and measurements.

Pics attached (edit: added a picture of the 5000F for comparison)

No need to check the bias - it has output coupling capacitors so unless they are shorted internally there should be no DC at the outputs. If shorted, you'd have other problems.

Nice unit!! Wondering why you feel it is not up to the quality of the ST-5000FW? Appears that everything that could be shielded safely is.

Interesting that it is capacitive coupled on the output. My older STR-6200F is not.

I stand corrected. The 6060FW is older than the 6200F, according to Orion.

Congrats on getting the 6060FW. A couple of light bulbs and a little Nerver-Dull and you are up and running. Fantastic that you multiplexer is working. The more I swap things around the more I am finding that I need to get he other 2 6060FWs up and running and sell off all my other receivers and settle down. I had my large cabinet out over the weekend and started to disconnect the Sony from the Bozaks and reconnect the Mc system and stopped. Looks like the Sony/Symphonys are going to be the system for tax season or at least until the 6120 gets here and I make some comparisons. The Mc amp will stay with the Wharfedales and be fed directly from either the tuner or CD sans a preamp.

YB2, my take on the build quality is just an initial reaction. I've added a partial picture of the internals of the 5000FW to the post with the pictures of this unit for comparison. The 6060 may have all the required shielding, but the quality of the metalwork is much higher in the 5000. Those little labels on each shielding cover in the 5000 just seem to say "this is a Rolls Royce".

Whitehall, thanks for the info. I'm a bit of a neophyte with electronics, and will do a little reading about capacative coupling. I'd like to hear more about the transformer solution in your unit and I'll post the wood case when I get a chance to put it together.

Brian, thanks for your information on this unit. It appears to be exactly what I was after. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the multiplexer. I'll know more when I can get the unit hooked into my house system and the rooftop antenna connection and have got the indicator lights working. Do you have an dial or pointer illumination on your's? I couldn't find any provision in mine for it, but want to make sure it wasn't removed at some point.

Interesting that you have no lights for the dial or pointer in the 6060FW. The later 7055A doesn't either. Seems like something that Sony could have figured out pretty simply. perhaps they didn't feel there were decent bulbs available.

There is no pointer light but there are dial lights and they illuminate the dial very evenly with a soft white light. Should not be a problem in changing the hue. There is no dial indicator light separate from the dial lights. Since the indicator is white it stands out against the soft glow well. Considering the vintage, it is no wonder the bulbs are out. This is a function of use more than anything and a buld is designed for x hours. On my 6065 all the indicators were working and then within about 72 hours they went out 1 by 1. 30+ years on a set of bulbs is decent. The 6060 that I have and use, the seller told me he replaced all the bulbs. 1 of the others I think has all the bulbs out and the other all work. If you are hearing a difference when you flip the mono/stereo switch then the multiplex is working and maybe only an alignment will be needed. AFAIK, the 7055A also has bulbs so maybe you need to change them.

I'll look again for those bulbs. But I couldn't find any a couple of weeks ago when I went through all the controls with Deoxit. If anyone has the schematic for the 7055A I would appreciate knowing if bulbs show up on the schematic.

no pix but a question for Axel and B2 (or anyone)

I've been doing a search for Sony TA-N40 intergrated amplifier. My nephew's buddy has one...just trying ta find some info for him . Anyone?

TA-N40..con't

well I didn't believe that neither Axel nor YB2 wouldn't know about it...so I insisted that my nephew's buddy phone me and read the number directly to me....it is TA-F40, and Axel had already answered this question someplace on this or another board. Thanks for the help though.. :thmbsp:

I'll keep this thread alive

I meant to post in this thread a couple of weeks ago.
Here are a few of my Sonys. ST5950SD tuner atop an STR7800SD receiver. And An ST-A6B tuner with an Akai integrated amp. Pics are not to hot, but oh well. Sony really made some cool stuff. But Sony is not as prevailant as Kenwood or Pioneer around here so I seldom encounter the stuff.

Will do.

Axel
The site says to only register rare units. The ST-A6B tuner certaintly is an uncommon unit. Now, is the 7800 receiver considered rare?

Bought these new c1979. Still all work well. Got original ctns and wrap.

Sorry for crappy pics, these are piled high as they serve to transfer all my old tapes.

ReEdger,

The 7800 is rather rare, if only because it wasn't distributed on all markets. Sony and Yamaha-wise, serial numbers are the only way to pop a production run approximation so... the more the merrier :)

ReEdger,

How do the ST-5960 and the ST-A6B compare in sound, features, and performance? The former has 5 gangs while the latter has 7. Cosmetically, the A6B looks better in photos. Oddly, the latter was only 75% of the cost of the former new and a year behind in introduction.

I never could figure what was in Sony's marketing plan with these two tuners introduced within a year of each other (according to FMTunerInfo).

The ST-4950 appears in october '74: 69,800Y,
the ST-5950 in april '75: 84,800Y,
the ST-A6B in september '77: 49,800Y.

SD wasn't available in Japan and no non-B version (ie. silver) was made of the ST-A6B.

As for comparison of the latter two... well, let's see: please buy one each, send them to me and I'll gladly report :D
