Shure V15 RS (Radio Shack)

I don't know why think the RS is less than Shure quality. In the SHURE discontinued list it has the V15 RS, meaning it was built by Shure and it lists the VN5MR as a replacement stylus. The specs with the RS state that the stylus is a beryllium shank with a nude hyperelliptical tip. The frequency response is 5 to 30,000 Hz, the balance is within 2db, tracking force 1.25 to 1.50 grams, optimum load is 47,000 ohms. Further in the info sheet it states that "If this SHURE product has any defects... return it to SHURE BROTHERS."

It is a SHURE cartridge with a RS designation.

Remember the famous Mr. Hirsch who penned thousands of reports on audio equipment? Everything sounded good to him, because he used specs, rather than ears. I bought plenty of crap, based on his writings.

Sorry, couldn't resist. But, you are correct. Think the word on JH was that "he never met a piece of stereo gear he didn't like." Think he did listen. Just had a tin-ear, so it all sounded good (or the same) to him. But, when you read some of the reports in Stereophile or the other current rags, they aren't much different. Like the $230K monstrosity from Japan that MF loved and had absolutely terrible measured results. Or the 4-box $30K CDP that they did recently with the same results.

Back to the Shure V15 RS. If it sounds as good as the M97xE, then it is a pretty decent cartridge. Not great, but I could stand to own. Might be just the thing for my 1229Q or 1249.

The V-15 Type RS is comparable to the Shure V15V-MR. It even came with the beryllium shank stylus. The VN5MR stylus is them correct replacement sylus for the cartridge.

Not true. The stylus for the V15RS was the VNSE3HE, a hyperelliptical with no beryllium. The VN5MR stylus was listed as a replacement when the original stylus was no longer available.

Not to start any thing, but the V15rs that I have, nib, has what I stated. The stylus has the beryllium shank, and the brush attachment. The RS was first listed with the stylus you mention, however there was a change to the
updated stylus, which is what I have. I find the sound comparable to the other SHURE V15 IIIs I have. I do not doubt that others may detect a difference. I will gladly take your crummy V15 RS s off your hands.

It's a .2 x.7 elliptical on a type 1 (thicker) cantilever, a clone of the N104E. The cart was the p-mount RXP3, the clone of the M104E. Same body as the M92E, M94E. The metal shank will fit into the V15RS, but I don't know about the plastic part--may need trimming/reshaping to fit.
