Skyfall

I like a world where a villain would just shoot Bond instead of putting him on a table to slowly be cut in half by a laser after the villain has left the room to only assume his overly complicated death-contraption worked.

Ironically, many folks find "Goldfinger" to be one of the best Bond's ever.

I like Craig and think he'd kick everybody's ass, but Connery, in a fight. Mama's boy??? I just don't see it at all...

I had higher hopes for Skyfall, but enjoyed it. Maybe I'll watch it again tonight. I've had it on loan from the library for almost a week and haven't made the time for it yet..:D

I just watched Skyfall and as much as I wanted to like it, it was too long and a bit boring. It's a shame since I do think Craig could be good at being Bond.

Sean Connery is still the benchmark for me.The movies were good for the technology of the time. Can you imagine what those Connery/Bond films could have been like with the sound capabilities of today, not to mention better special effects?

After the reboot in Casino Royale (which is my favorite Fleming book and a very good movie), I didn't see why we needed another reboot with Skyfall.

I didn't see any "reboot" here. "M" died, but that happens.

I think he beats the hell out of Roger Moore, Dalton and Lazenby's Bonds.

I always liked Lazenby in OHMSS. He seemed to fit into the role well.

Ain't that the truth! When did he stop being an aspirational character?

Reading Fleming's books, I'm not sure he ever was.

As I long time Bond fan, I propose that it is not the actor, but the script that is the problem. I saw the first Bond film "Dr No" at the drive-in when I was in high school, have seen every film since and own all of them on DVD. I have read all of the Ian Fleming books and in my opinion, the film that most closely follows the book and character is "From Russia With Love". After that, with "Goldfinger" we started to get into gimmicks and action. Soon the films strayed away from good writing (and the book) and suspense to chases and explosions.

OHMSS stayed very close to the book and the character as portrayed within, IMHO.

Outside of using a fancy-schmancy laser instead of a more pedestrian saw, that scene came pretty much straight from the book.

I have to agree with you on both points. That was one of the best Bond movies, certainly the most touching. George Lazenby did a very good job as Bond and even looked a lot like Connery. His problem was that he was not Connery and the viewing public never accepted him as his replacement. I wish he had made more of them. I loved his comment in the beginning "This never happened to the other fellow". As far as being true to the book, the scene with the skier and snowblower encounter was just as I envisioned it when I read the book. Perhaps the best adaptation of a scene in any Bond movie.

i really liked Skyfall, probably as much as the recent Casino Royale. i have probably seen [only] 1/3 of the Bond movies, and i found Javier Bardem to be a wonderfully cast as one of the creepiest and least predictable Bon villains i can think of. i do feel like Skyfall gives more of a nod to the Bourne movies than the previous two films, but it works here with this villain and plot. it also reminds me a bit of the American adaptation of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (and not because of the obvious lead actor connection)...

He is not cold, that is the problem - he is trying to be and it is all a front. Yoou can see it in his face - that is why I call him a Mama's Boy - trying to act tough but really can't.

I couldn't disagree with your assessment of Craig's Bond more. I mean really a Mama's Boy? You'd probably think Charles Bronson would make a good Bond. You know, someone who could really act.

Casino Royal, excellent
Skyfall, I gave it a falling grade, sorry, I mean a failing grade.
Adele's song on the other hand, excellent.

Best Bond?? Got to be "You Only Live Twice" - starting with the murder of Bond by machine gun ...
- Watching Mr Connery "become japanese" - sheesh ...
but the whole sequence with Little Nellie was classic - and - the ninjas descending into the volcano!
JK - its a guilty pleasure its so out of date and so bad. Blame Roald Dahl for that one!

And those other folks??

James Bond
Jason Bourne
Jack Bauer

I liked it as opposed to disliking it, but it's possibly my least favorite with Craig in the lead. Love Bardem and thought he was pretty OK but again, just not exceptional in this one.

We are going to re-watch it either this evening or tomorrow. Some movies you instantly like whereas some grow on you. Maybe this will grow but I seriously doubt it will break my top five Bond movies.

Finally watched this...easily the best of the recent Bond films and maybe the best ever. Daniel Craig is a great 007 and an excellent actor.

I also watched the documentary 'Everything Or Nothing' about the history of the franchise. It's a great recounting of the producers and thier relationship with Ian Fleming and the men who played Bond. Must-see for fans of the genre.
Hands down the best so far. But this is not to demean prior Bonds. Look, previous Bond movies were not only put together for a different era, they were also done with far smaller budgets and special effects that were way behind today.

I never read the books, but I get the "debonair" aspect of it all, but let's be real, what the directors brought to the screen, Craig aside, is more realism, with of course healthy helpings of impressive un-realistic special effects. I was watching a different movie last night and guys with machine guns were blazing away at the good guys from a roof top, good guy reaches out from hidden position and hits bad guys using a handgun. Yeah right.

I've loved Bond movies all my life and own several, but I'll take Craig, overall, to any prior Bond. Connery, of course, is on his heels and towards the end his cycle was getting "long in the tooth" too. Sorry, but this obsession over Connery is just that. Get over it. Brosnan was really good, and who could turn away from Halle!

Anyway, all were entertaining in their own ways, and most are very dated, like watching Star Wars. But you have to give credit were credit is due given what they had to work with over the years. I still enjoy claymation movies, they too are dated.

I wasn't ready for the ending. Really caught me off guard as I really enjoyed how Judi Dench portrayed M and went back and forth with "Bond". I'll miss her character.

Very true. While I was sort of expecting it, it held real emotional content both for M and Bond. I just wish they had written more of that in previous Bond films.

Watching the it a second time right now and really liking it quite a bit.
I like Craig quite a bit as Bond and sure he's second only to Connery. I wish he was younger so he could make more films; at 45 he's probably only got about 3 more films left. Maybe less as they are saying Bond 24 is 3 years out.

I'm going to miss Judy Dench, but think Ralph Fiennes will do just fine as M.

Fiennes and Craig are two top-notch actors. Any film with both has a good chance of being very enjoyable.

Don't disagree with that idea. Just don't think it worked that well. More a matter of questionable writing than anything else.

No I don't - I just think Daniel Vraig is SO out of his comfort zone playing Bond, it is sad. As I said, watch Cowboys vs Aliens and you see Daniel Craig playing a cowboy version of HIS Bond. There is no difference - Craig is about as oggd of an actor as Keanu Reeves is - NOT MUCH OF ONE. He is one of the worst Bonds evah.

You do understand you are in the minority here? It's fine you dislike Craig as Bond but don't try to convince the majority that like him. What's the point?

A majority of people that I know think he's either the best or second best Bond. In fact, nobody I hang out with in "real life" thinks otherwise. Not one (we talk a lot about movies). Maybe what you think of him has a lot to do with what generation of Bond you were born into? I, for one, don't really get the Connery worship. Regardless of how close they are to the books, I can't get over how dated and contrived the early films are.
