Arkay - I like your idea of using styrofoam packing material rather than lumber: easier to cut and move around once assembled.

Once I have these panels installed I will post 47 photographs of my extensive audio gear collection for you all to enjoy. The 47 photographs will be of the same gear in the same room, though

The poor man's version is simple: collect up a bunch of those molded styrofoam packing pieces used to cushion appliances and such inside cardboard shipping cartons. Cut and piece them together so as to make an similar interesting design, with lots of varying-height ins-and-outs.

so the styrofoams would work as diffraction device and i guess does not have to be sound absorbent, right? since styrofoams are probably not so great at absorbing sound. what's more effective? diffraction or absorption? or are they for different purposes?
