Sony 2251 and/or 2250 owners thread

Oh one last picture, something most turntables don't have, a parking place for the auxiliary weight, one that captures and holds the weight so it will not fall out and get lost. Sweet.

I still have my 2251! Definitely one of the turntables I will never get rid of. I still have the original arm, but the bearings are shot. Last year I had a Fidelity Research FR-24 mk2 on it, and I recently tried out an FR-54,( there’s a picture in its manual of the PS-2500 as a typical model of the era that it would be mounted on).

Mine still has W&F measurements of about 0.45%, so not exactly ideal. You can see the dots go back and forth a bit on each rotation. I can’t say I can hear it for sure, but I’m sure it affects the sound. The speed also drifts and gets a good bit faster as it’s left on. I was never able to resolve these issues due to my lack of technical knowledge, although I know that the speed drift issue at least was remedied by some smart AK’ers in a long thread around 2012. One day, I intend to get mine worked on to bring it back to proper spec, as I really love it. It’s my favorite turntable in terms of looks, for sure.
 
Thank you Blue Shadow. I wondered what that hole in my 2251 armboard was for. I don't have the auxiliary weight or the original tonearm.

I love the PS-2251LA

I landed mine in the original box, with all the original swag, even the screwdriver and original oil.

I got really lucky on this one, traded it for a set of 4301b I had restored. Was a nice set with Jantzen caps and Jantzen shunts.

This was a single owner table, was used for a few years than boxed up and put away. The platter was removed and also boxed up properly. I got it from the nephew of the original owner. Had all the paperwork and history. He hand bought a new VPI and didn’t want the Sony.... needless to say I jumped at the deal. The only thing I was rid of in the deal was the cart it came with. Was a LOMI OB, SP12 if I remember correctly. Sold it off to a fellow AKer who wanted it for his BO set up, so it was good it went to a good home!

He even had the box to the arm :)

That real OL-2K is precious stuff. I've been using Mobil DTE Light, the last 10 years. FWIW.... Mobil is a very good substitute. :thumbsup:

I think I may still have my original Sony oil bottle somewhere, unfortunately empty (fell on its side and leaked into the box I'd stored it in.)

I've posted a picture or 3 of my TTS-2250 over the years and asked a few AK'ers to take a peek under theirs
at the power transformer to see if it had the multi-voltage setup.

I haven't run across another one and after this thread was revived with a picture showing the N.A. version [bottom view]

Since this particular 2250 was sold as a drive only and came with the foldout template
for mounting in a plinth it may be one reason for the multi volt supply being scarce.

hi, i just bought a ps-1800a and would like to put a disc weight on top, but read that that ain‘t a good idea because of the subchassis which seem to be incompatible to extra weights ... is that correct?

i thought that because the 1800 has the same motor as the ttp 3000 which has a much heavier platter the extra weight shouldn‘t be a problen, at least not for the motor.

can anyone help?

This Sony has a sprung suspension, correct? Loading it with an additional weight is going to change how the suspension works. I don't use platter weights. Not on the platters. I put them on the dust covers to reduce their resonance, as long the cover is not part of the sprung suspension.

hi, i have another question on my “brand new“ ps-1800a. i wanted to adjust the tonearm, but noticed, that the tt hasn't got a manual tonearm lift, means the lift is always in the up-position (at least as long as the tt isn't spinning). unfortunally the manual doesn't give any advice how to adjust things right so maybe someone in this forum could help me. thanks.

ok, i think i got it right by just letting the table spin – the armlift then lowers and i can do the adjustment ...

but now i have another problem with the speed. 33 1/3 is too fast. i read in the manual (of the ps-1800, haven't got one of the ps-1800A), that it is possible ton fix that by adjusting the motor unit ... my question: do i have to remove the whole base to do that?? the manual says, i have to place the turntable in the horizontal position but if i have removed the whole base how can i put the unit in a horizontal position?? pleas help me someone!

Did you try a new belt?
