Sony CDP-S7

Pretty rare and undervalued ; 1990 until about 1994 vintage ; didn't sell much...
Like the other elements of the S7 serie, the CDP shares a few common pieces with the smaller (and later) S1 and S2 mid-sized series which all were also very very good sound for the money. The S2 set even had a hybrid 'stat/cone loudspeaker speaker!

You've got yourself an excellent cd player and ilimzn over here has a few mods for these :yes:

Hi there,

Funny thing, me seeing this here! I have the TC-S7 3 head cassette deck! Same styling, and a horizontal loader, too. People always mistake it as a CD player. Anyone out there know any more about all of these components? Are they still around, and available somewhere(besides eBray)? Crossroadazn, where did you find this brand new(if you don't mind me asking)? I wouldn't mind putting a few more pieces of this set together someday.

Got it on eBay from a dealer for a good price and there is only one, never see it before but it looks solid and want to try out. Not much info of it anywhere.

The series wasn't much of a success for Sony ; not much distributed but more in Europe (ie. germany) than in the US...

I think that, given the intended market target and price level, the looks weren't really attractive (no flames please - I'm talking market here, not personal opinions or sound quality!)

I'll post the whole system on TVK someday.

Both Part of Sony's very rare "Series 7" From what I can gather there was an integrated amplifier, cassette, and CD player. I ownder the casette deck for a while, but eventually sold it, as I was unable to find the matching amp and CD.

Keep it around for bit, and pick up the matching cassette (fairly rare, but not impossible to find) IMHO, it's a great little combo!

The CDP-S7 is internally uses a mechanism that is somewhere between a CDP-X222ES and CDPX333ES, leaning to the cheaper 222. The electronics is almost exactly the same as the X222ES. I've modded one of these and they can sound decent, to say the least. In particular, the output OPamps (originally NE5532) get an upgrade to Burr-Brown FET input parts, resistors in the differential-to-single ended conversion after the DAC get changed to metal film 1%, the integrating cap for the DAC also gets replaced by a quality mica cap, and I added decouplers to the various power supplies, as well as slightly upgraded the electrolytic filter caps. This model also comes without an optical output, but one can be added because it's provided for on the PCB.
Bostik damping panels were stuck on the insides of the case as well.
The end result was virtually indistinguishable from my modded X333, soundwise.
Even stock, it's a great little machine, though.

I think I may still have photos of the stock board and the same after the mods, I've done these for the person who ordered the upgrade.

I just came across what looks to be a dealer display of the CDP-S7 CD player. The dealer still has the original box and the player doesn't look like it's been used much, if at all. The dealer wants $100.00 for the player and will provide a 3 month warranty....think this is a good deal?

BTW, the dealer also has the S7 integrated amp available. Again, it just sits there in an enclosed audio rack.
