SX-838 troubleshooting assistance please

If they are identical except for packaging it doesn't matter too much.

Sometimes when looking for small lytics, and you can't find the exact match, try looking for a poly of the same value and voltage. MTF Likes stacked poly's for anything less than I think 4uf if he can fit them in.

Note that in the early 70's the value system that the manufacturers used changed to the present numbering system. It used to be whole numbers and .5 decimals. so changing overto the new system if you had a 20uf/15V you could look for a 22uf/16V, 22uf/20V or even go as high as 27uf/16V or 27uf/20V.

Most of the time it's recommended that you DO NOT go DOWN in value. With a 20% variance in capacitance in most current capacitors, you CAN go down in some cases. Say you have a 50uf/25V and need to replace it. 20% of 50uf is 10uf. so theoretically you can go DOWN to a 47uf (3%) or up to a 56uf(11%).

the following is as I understand it and is NOT intended to be "GOSPEL". More knowledgeable persons can and will correct this if it is inaccurate.
The voltage is the max working voltage the cap can safely handle. So a 20V can be safely increased to a 30 or 35v so there is some working voltage headroom. Surge voltage rating is more often than not 20-40% higher than working voltages. These occur on startup. So increasing the values on caps has it's rewards in a sense. You get a slightly increased working capacitance and at the same time the parts aren't being stressed at their limits.

OK - I'm good with the fishing concept. I'll go do it.

Here's the thing, at first blush, when I'm trying to use the mouser search engine for the two cssa caps in question - I don't find any UKL's or film caps that match up.....

For example, c1 1 25 cssa. By definition (assuming I've absorbed your information correctly), I need either a UKL or film cap for a replacement. When I use the search string "1uf 25v" "in stock", and "capacitor", it boils down to 3 leaded electrolytic capacitors (none of which are Nichicon UKL’s), and 2 film caps, both of which are .1uf - not 1uf.

Is the solution then to up the voltage rating to 50v? If so, I come across this:667-ECQ-V1H105JL5.

Similarly, for c3 0.47 25 cssa, I find no suitable caps when searching with ".47uf 25v". But, I do for ".47uf 50v":
647-UKL1HR47KDDANA (electrolytic)

And four likely choices for film:
667-ECQ-V1H474JL3
667-ECQ-V1H474JL
667-ECQ-V1H474JLW
667-ECQ-V1H474JL5

But - when I do a "compare", they show identical specs, except for "packaging". So - Which one of the four to choose? Dunno....time to go fishing.

As an aside, I assembled and tested my Dim Bulb tester today. Works great.

On searching for caps on Mouser I do it a bit differently

I select the product of caps and then the appropriate sub category
in this case Film Capacitors and then Polyester Film

For Stacked Film caps it is OK to use a higher voltage than you might in a electrolytic. Size is the most important thing.

Now I select stocked then I choose my cap value 1uf and then I pick the voltage I need 25v in this case no matches so I use the CTRL key and up
the voltages until I get a match when I got to 50v 10 matches where available.

I like the Panasonics so this is what I picked

Goat: a quick note:

for general caps I type in 100uf UPW and it gives me a check list of voltages to select or I can cause them all to be sorted by voltage.. instant overview of what they carry for that line, and what's in stock. and when I sort the target list in the spreadsheet by (cea/ceanl,cssa etc first) capacitance and voltage, you can see how I get the speed in selecting caps.....

got a weird cap value? just use UPW and it will TELL you what values it has in a check list. Pick the closest.

do the same for low leakage, 2.2uf UKL, and so forth

non polarized same thing. i just don't remember for sure: ues, uvp,uep ....

stacked film caps are ECQ and DSF...

Just so you understand the effort, I just cut and pasted every cap type into mouser.com and looked at the data page for that cap, thus discovering that the uf values were correct, and that a few voltage substitutions had been done. Had the list been longer I would have just passed on by...

Question #1:
The guideline posted previously specified that cea caps should be of the UKL variety. That's why I chose the one's I did. This is an excepoion to that rule, for the reason you cite?

Question #2:

I understand why electrolytic caps need to be replaced, and I understand why I'm replacing the problem transistors that Mark flagged for me. But why am I changing the other transistors and the diodes? Do they go unstable with age, or did they get superseded by superior components?

Just trying to clarify, as I'm making a reference document that I can use in the future. I don't to be a bigger pest than necessary. :)

Once word got around my circle of acquaintances that I'm attempting this, gear has started falling from the sky into my lap.......

I understand why electrolytic caps need to be replaced, and I understand why I'm replacing the problem transistors that Mark flagged for me. But why am I changing the other transistors and the diodes? Do they go unstable with age, or did they get superseded by superior components?

Just trying to clarify, as I'm making a reference document that I can use in the future. I don't to be a bigger pest than necessary. :)

Once word got around my circle of acquaintances that I'm attempting this, gear has started falling from the sky into my lap.......

regarding capacitors:

I have a rally to prepare for and help at tonight, so that list will be worked on tomorrow.

Cap rules of thumb (nichicon)

I use upw, uhe for general caps including signal coupling in that order depending upon stock "cea"
I use ues, uep & uvp in that order for bipolar depending on stock
I use ukl for low leakage caps (in sensitive areas they reduce the noise floor)"ceanl", "cssa", "csza"
0.1uf to 2 uf I use stacked film where they fit: DFS and ECQ

solid aluminum and tantalum caps get stacked film when possible, or ukl's otherwise. "cssa" "csza"

c?B means it's an axial cap = one lead on each end
c?a = radial = both leads on one end


searching at mouser:

easy..... need a 100uf cap? search on: 100uf UPW

then find your voltage and if stocked / in stock and possibly a size choice. go UP in voltage if your voltage is not available.

voila....

sub uhe, ukl, dfs, ecq etc for upw for the different type...

just because a transistor is listed doesn't mean it needs to be changed. theentire list is there for folks who are having problems with that circuit.

flyback diode 1n4004

q6 gets a ksd1616, technical reason: "safe operating area"...

look at the current 939 thread re: protection...

If I was ordering parts I would get the transistors and diodes for the PS and Protection boards.

The cost is minimal and even if you do not need them now you may in the future.

If what you say is true about other units coming your way they may be used to repair something else.

Exactly what I was thinking, as I read the narrative on the 939 protection circuit problems in the thread Mark referenced. Seems like cheap insurance just in case.

Can I assume I can I make all of them the same to simplify ordering?

Only difference is the 667-ECQ-V1H105JL3 are ammo packed which means that they
will come with a strip of paper on the leads so they can be loaded
into an insertion machine kind of a hassle to get it off.

Magic word: HEAT....

Of course it helps if one keeps a hot air gun (paint stripper) hanging next to the bench, always plugged in and ready to go .

The glue residue will affect soldering a but, but it's on the far end of the lead - which is usually unused.


and yes, if others are tossing equipment at you, extra transistors are useful, these are the ones I keep around in quantity:

ksa992/ksd1845 audio and general
ksb1116/ksd1616 instead of a733/c945, more current drive
ksc2310 150v
ksa1013/ksa2383 up to 1 amp

Years ago I would have killed for a list like this....
there have been others on this list, that have been dropped primarily because one of the complementary pair has been obsoleted...

Goat67 has vetted the cap list, and I've made his suggested changes and added all the transistors and the two diodes mentioned.

Am I ready to distill it into a BOM and make the order?
