I think it's the gear/lever that functions with the size selector seized up. Common problem with several Techincs of this vintage. Do a search, can be fixed if you have some mechanical skills.

Remove the platter,lock down the tone arm,leave dust cover on and flip it over.Remove the bottom cover this will give you access to the mechanism where you can clean off the old grease and lube all moving parts.

Cleaned and re-lubed the parts I could from taking off bottom plate. Didn't go underneath further. Still basically same issue. Thanks for the answer. Is a turntable with only this problem worth anything? Manual start works great and auto return works great. Tsk

I just restored / fixed my sl-1600 with same problem using the vinyl engine posts and pics as guides. Cleaned up old grease and applied new grease in the mechnanisms underneath.
