Technics SL-DL1 opinions?

I've found a technics SL-DL1 linear tracking turntable for $40.

Also is this a good first TT and whats a good cartridge for around $100?

The AT92E is a good cartridge, and a solid recommendation for someone looking for a p-mount cartridge. They are readily available at a good discount from their list price, particularly when packaged in a plastic blister on a card (the CD suffix on the model number).

If you are interested in spending all of your budget, I'd recommend a new-old-stock ADC PSX-30 from LPGear. A search should find you several threads about this cartridge.

The AT92E with the elliptical would certainly 'fit the bill' and get you started. However, the AT92E shown lower on the same page with the Shibata stylus will be a BIG step up (as it should be for $120 more). Get the cheap one and see how you like the SL-DL1. If you like it, spring for the Shibata cartridge. It is never bad to have a back-up cartridge.

I ended up buying this table yesterday and everything works perfectly on it and some one replaced the cartridge on with a newer technics P510s with minimal wear on the needle.

I going to buy a new tonearm belt and the cheap cartridge from turntableneedles.com just to try it out and see if it sounds any better.
