The Great Vinyl Experiment

So this test is enough to convince me to use windex and armorall. Thanks for the info!

Not suggesting you use it. Short term testing concludes that it isn't awful to use either one. Personally I'd go with a gentler solution, just because....

Too much GD hype in my opinion. Vinyl is fairly tough stuff, more subject to the relatively high PSI of a needle against the inflexibilty of dirt than any residue a cleaner may leave. If it weren't you wouldn't be able to clean it with whatever cleaner you prefer. Clean with whatever the feck makes you feel good in your soul. I'm good with water/alcohol/Dawn. I wouldn't fecking turn down a good album that's been cleaned with Windex or Armour All, although I'd probably reclean them to get whatever residue I could off them.

Too much is read into this stuff. It only sounds as good as (pick one) your source/amp/speakers. Heyzeus mutha feckin' crystals... do whatever floats your GD boat. If you want to spend $100 an ounce for purified holy water blessed by Lord Krell, that's fine. If you're happy with a beat to hell Partridge Family record cleaned by the tongue of your bulldog WTF difference does it really make? To me it is the music, the feelings it generates, that matters... and the people I'm with when I hear it or the people I think about when I hear certain songs, or the people who have shared music with me- people who say " I think you'll like this" or who have shared some good music and good times with me....

Unless you've got a 1K cartridge on your TT I doubt it really matters, and then only because of your investment. My setup is at best upper mid fi, my ears are far from golden, but I don't think there is a substantial difference. Long term, continual use? Maybe. Or maybe not. Buy the ticket, take the ride....

Sorry gents, its a fine line between fueling an experiment with a scotch addled mind and crossing over to speaking your mind....

Thank you to everyone involved. I had a terrible day and this thread made me laugh harder than I have in a long time. It's sad that I own every BM, every Barb and every Partridge Family LP but that's life.

I truly appreciate the proper use of the scientific method. You even seem to have had a control subject. #%&@ing brilliant.:thmbsp:

Once again thanks.

You're welcome. Probably the first time "brillant" and my name have ever been associated, so thanks.

Hey, somebody has to love BM, Bard & the Partridge Family.....so it ain't sad my friend. I have a certain fondness for Olivia Newton John and Judy Collins....but don't tell anyone...

The music is why the technology exists. I listen on what some would call terribly inferior equipment.

Doubt that, hoss.

We might encourage a little upscaling here and there, but I don't think we'd shun you for whatever you might use. You've got to start somewhere!

I'm not really starting I just am disabled with very little money. I own about 3000LPs and that many CDs and Cassettes. Been in radio or worked in music stores for a long time. I listen to music as research for a project I'm working on for grad school.

I'm so feckin' not worthy!!!!

Let us know what you've got, there may be a local AK'r that can "bump" you up in sound quality. Karma works that way....

After that incredibly tedious sequence of vinyl cleaning posting elsewhere, thanks all for lightening things up and making me smile.

No need to be sorry at all; this thread is priceless on several levels :thmbsp:

The only real bugaboo I see is the Armor All. I don't know how good of a cleaner it is, I've always considered it a protectorant, so maybe it's more like a Groove Glide or whatever that LP lubricant stuff is. Back when I used to use it on motorcycles, we NEVER used it on tires, seats or hand grips because it made them too slippery and one didn't need any surprises at speed. Also, it always seemed to attract dust to it, especially in car dashboards, so I'm not sure if I'd really want that on my LPs. At any rate, it definitely leaves something on the LP which is contrary to what I want my cleaner to do.

Thanks for doing the legwork and giving the guys something to mess with!! :lmao:

This is the only part I'm not clear on. Do I understand you will be drinking WD-40 next?

WD-40 is just for flavour! A fine single malt polytoulene with just a bit of pure spring WD-40 is indeed my next test!

"Off to more scotch! Might try carb cleaner and WD-40 next...."

You might try paint remover or stripper for that vinyl that "just won't come clean"..;-)

I'm thinking of using it on the wife's "Danny Kaye & the Clinger Sisters".. or maybe "Marlo Thomas's "Free to be You & Me"...

Gives the music a unique "liquidy" sound after treatment... hard to adjust the anti-skate though :-(

Spanky & Our gang albums seem to be immune to any mis-treatment, though...

Whoa lotsa fecking, hmm opinion only, but thanks!

I wonder if Vodka would work? Mythbusters have proven it to works for other things quite well. Why not as a vinyl cleaner?

Justen,

Didn't know you could put more than one thumbnail in a thread?

Regardless, you cracked me up. I'm listening...

Sometimes I get feckin' frustrated....

And I toned it down for our more sensitive readers. You know, like tentoze....don't want to offend his delicate sensibilities!
