The "I Missed It by THAT MUCH" thread

I missed out on thursday, big time! I was 2nd in line for a pair of original Heresy's, 7/10 condition... for $250 CAD. The other guy beat me to it by 5 minutes! I hope that he enjoys them.
 
This: An all-original, very (very) clean 1960 Fender Esquire Custom: Bound Burst Body + Rosewood Board. Super rare yo. I hesitated one day and -- pffffft -- gone. This was 1987 or 1988, so @ asking price of ~ $700 it wasn't "a steal", but it was under-market and a one-owner geetar with original everything still intact. Same geetar today: USD 8,000-9,000. A nice (albeit less clean) example:

For y'all non-geetar heads, it's an "Esquire" 'cuz it has only one (factory-intstalled / spex) PUP, the angled "lead" PUP located at the bridge -- not visible in this ^^^ photo 'cuz the bridge cover (i.e., "ashtray") is attached to the top. Thus, you'll not no evidence of a front (i.e., "neck") PUP having ever graced this baby.

Note: I did manage to score, some years later, a nice '67 version of this same model, but that '60 was lighter, had (to my mind) a better overall "finish", and "feel". Oh well, I ended up trading away the '67 and, as most often was the case, I'd likely have sold/traded away the '60, too.
 
Ugh. This one is totally my fault.

Local guy had a really nice Magnavox FD3030 CD player. I contacted him and told him I’d “mull it over”.

Well several days passed and I sat on my butt as the guy kept lowering the price. Finally, down to $120. Like an IDIOT I still waited to think about it.

Finally, I decided to pull the trigger on this CD player I actually really wanted.

Sold.

I just bought one off eBay last week for $405 (cost of item and shipping from the Netherlands).

It’s near mint and beautiful but I’m a stupid a-hole and it cost me $280.

I need to learn to jump on stuff immediately when it’s an obvious good deal.

Sigh.
 
On another forum, a fellow offered a pristine Tektronix 575 curve tracer for £80, a good price. It had a rare -- supposedly factory -- add-on, which was a "Mod 122C" (high voltage) operation switched with a key lock. Very nice. I made a mental note to send the guy an email and then... Forgot. I guess I got distracted by a squirrel and... Did nothing.

A week or two passed and the guy posted to say that because no one took up his offer, he sold it on eBay.
 
Back before I knew anything about tube equipment (it was 2001 but, mind you, I still know very little), my best friend's dad (his name was Dave) was getting rid of his old stereo gear. I'd known Dave for 10 years and we'd gotten to be great friends, so he offered me his gear first.

Down in his basement, he says "These are the first serious stereo pieces I ever bought, want em?" They looked old and I didn't want old, so I passed. He insisted I take them, so I did but gave them to a local guy who did stereo repairs. He was delighted to get them because they were two Dyanco ST 70s and the matching Dyanco preamp (I don't remember the model, but I do remember it didn't have a number, maybe is was PAS or something?). No idea if the worked or not.

What I did wind up taking was a KLH Model Fifty Two receiver, and a pair of Jensen speakers which I still use in my garage. Since Dave passed away in 2013, that little KLH means a lot to me.
 
90’s era misses:

60’s Fender P-bass, Dakota Red for $800

60’s Fender Jazz and P-bass, $2k for both...

So it goes...

I've always had a soft spot for Radio Shack and have owned most of their interesting speakers. One pair I've never found was the early '70s Optimus that were the size and shape of Wharfedale W-70s. The model number escapes me at the moment.

May have been Optimus 7. There is a pair for sale in a store nearby
 
I messaged someone about a Luxman suckface receiver at $30 about a week or so ago. I was likely the first to respond to the ad but was out of town. I was very clear as to when I would be back and I thought we had an understanding that we would meet on the afternoon of the day I got back to town. As soon as I could, about noon, I said "I'm back". I got the reply: "I sold it an hour ago"
 
Not audio related, but I was in Vegas one time with a bunch of quarters in my hand looking for a slot machine to play. I saw one of my favorites about halfway down the aisle and paused for a few seconds, trying to decide if I wanted to walk down there. I decided to go for it, but when I was about 10 feet away, the woman sitting at the adjacent slot machine reached over and put a quarter in the machine I was going to play. She hit the jackpot! ($3200). Ugh! I could've bought some nice audio equipment with that kind of money. LOL

Someone from AK was selling some ADS speakers on craigslist near me, I saw the ad within 5 minutes of it being posted. He says, "yeah, come get them, they're yours..." But he didn't send me an address. I ask for an address and he says, "you didn't respond first, someone else is on their way now"

I guess he was confused by the way emails are sorted... oh boomers
 
Second in line for a perfect looking pair of JBL L7... sold for $60. :(

Same thing happened to me for a pair of JBL L110... sold for $200.

Guess I'm just not fit for JBL
