It was early, on a Sunday morning. I was in the Den, scanning eBay, when I found a pair of Infinity RS-1B's, with a Buy It Now price of $800. I yelled downstairs to my wife, that I was "going to buy a pair of speakers". She said "OK". I turned to my laptop, clicked Buy, and got the message that This Auction Has Ended...! 30 seconds too late.
It's just goes to show, it's better to ask forgiveness, than permission...!

Well, having had so many GREAT scores, there are certainly many more that I missed. One that still resonates, about 7 yrs ago I was looking at CL and at the top was a new listing for a complete Sansui system, centerpiece was a an AU-20000, plus TU-9900 tuner, cassette deck and turntable, some speakers too, if I recall. Had a ph# and I was the first caller. Asking price was $300. I ask a few Q's, scribble down the address and am on the street within an hour of the posting, but, I cannot find the address. Small street with like 8 houses, but I apparently wrote down the wrong number or, thinking worse, it is all a cruel joke.
So, I call the seller back and say we talked earlier and I am on the street, but cannot find the house. He says, "I talked to several people, someone else offered me more" and he hung up on me.
The street was a dead end and it appeared to pickup on the other side, so thinking somehow it was an odd numbering scheme, I drive to the other side, but still nothing. So, I call him back again, this time, I quickly say, I am fine with paying more, so he then gives me the correct house number. I drive back around to see a truck at the house that was not there before. I get to the door, guys says, someone is already here, first come, first serve. Ugh. I found out later they agree on $550.
Although that was a punch in the gut, karma prevailed, a few months later, I found a pristine AU-20000/TU-9900 with original boxes for a great price.
A year earlier than the above, I find a CL listing that basically says there is a hoard of speakers/parts. I send an email, but no reply, so after a day or so, I send another communication. This time, I get an answer and learn that this woman's long time common law husband was a huge tinkerer and collector of speakers. He passed away and the old house was full of all sorts of speakers, she was taking an inventory, but the contents were controlled by his children. She sends me a CD full of pictures and although a lot were low end, a good chunk were very nice collectible/restorable speakers. We touch base over the course of 3-4 yrs, eventually falling to me sending her a note annually to see if any movement on a decision by the children on what to do with the contents. All along she had assured me that she would reach out when something was going to be done. I contacted her in March of that year, then about 7 months later and she tells me that an auction house came in and cleaned it out. No idea what happened to everything. Another punch in the gut. Nothing I could not live without, but having invested so much time in the correspondence, I really wanted the opportunity to see it all first hand. There were many sets of AR/KLH/Advent, Allison One, Bozak and boxes and boxes of loose drivers, parts, etc.

A couple months back, the widow of Goldy McJohn of Steppenwolf was selling some speakers and a few records. Made the appointment on when we could come by. Called the next morning and said we were on our way. She said that she was holding the speakers for us. 1 hour later we pull up, and some guy was loading them into his truck. We walked into her house, and her boyfriend was unloading everything. She was hiding in her bedroom, and wouldn't come out. My wife was livid. She just said, let's get out of here. There were about 10 lps left, so bought those. Some cool lps. The speakers were JBL L100 for 50.00 and Sony Apm for 25.00.

Well, I've posted about this one before, but here it is again...
Dollars and Sense thread here on AK alerted me to some Altec 19's in Madison, WI. I was going to pick them up for $150!!!! But by the time I was ready to head up there, the seller wised up as to what he had. I offered $600. But I think he decided he was going to just keep them. I'm sure he ended up selling them for closer to their proper value (good for him). That would have been the score of a lifetime for me.
Another one - found TWO Thorens TD-124 on Craigslist. One was spoken for, I said I'd take the other for $250. They agreed. Motor did not work and no arm though. I talked to some AK folks who sort of scared me out of it...like the restoration was going to end up costing more than just buying one "already done"...and I didn't have time to fiddle at the moment...so I passed on it. Still regret that one.
One final one, some Beveridge Model 3's in Milwaukee. There was confusion as to where these were located...Milwaukee or Nashville, TN. I thought they were in Nashville (9 hours away from me) so I did not bid. Ended up being in Milwaukee (3 hours away)! If I had known they were in Milwaukee, I would have surely got them. They went for $500.

Found an old bookmark to an auction I bid on. This is Canadian funds, Fisher tube amp, premap, Thorens TD-124 and I forget the arm and cartridge, not interesting Sony reel to reel and installed is a Danish teak sideboard. Bad timing for me to get a big unit but I look back and that was a deal for the buyer. This is Canadian $.

I bought a very similar cabinet at an estate sale a couple years back. Had similar if not identical Fisher units, but a much lesser TT and no reel to reel. $75.

Recently missed Cornwall II's for $20 and a Marantz 2250 with a wood case for $30, both on Facebook Marketplace.
Did you score either the SX-737 plus two cool Altec speakers ($100 total) or the marantz 5010 tape deck plus new belts and belt tool (free -- that one hurt)?
I missed both by minutes!
Saw the 727 combo, but that wasn't that great of a deal honestly. Didn't see the 5010...dang.
