Well, it's from the "Famous charisma label", featuring the mad hatter...I can't tell anything else though... I believe that label had some monty phython lp's on it, but this isn't one of them:D
 
Yep, that's correct and that's a UK label although this was also released in the US.

Hint: The title is from the mid 70s.

I'll check-in tomorrow morning with more hints as needed.
 
I'm going to guess Rick Wakeman - Journey to the Centre of the Earth? I know the cover has the orchestra on it, never saw the inside. Not even sure if there is a gatefold.

Got my A&M gatefold out of this and different image. Quick check sees it wasn't released on Charisma. :scratch2:
 
I found out the answer but only by searches. Never heard of the artist.

Not to be tempted by bad form I better hold off from the reveal. Sorry. This thread is too tempting not to use the tool in front of me if I don't have the album.
 
I think if you work to get it it's OK to reveal. What's great about this thread is I just spent fifteen minutes looking at Charisma Label artists and learned a lot, even though I didn't find it. I keep thinking of keyboardists like Wakeman, Emerson and Moraz but can't find a match for them. I'll be waiting for the answer.

Perhaps you are right. I was hoping for some direction and I'd really like the OP enricosonic to clarify his feeling on this next time he is back. This thread is his baby and I thank him for it.

Indeed one of the fun things about this thread could be the research done to find the artist. After all it's not much fun if we have the album and know the answer. I found it fun to find this artist. Eleven copies available worldwide on fleabay and one CD. I'll be keeping an eye out for this album. Looks like one I'd like.

What do you guys think? Should I reveal even though I have never heard of this artist before and researched the answer (thanks google images) or would this be bad form?
 
After a think it would be bad form to reveal after a search. I've had my fun finding out. No need to spoil anyone elses fun who actually has the album or recognises the cover.

As the OP indicated in post #1, we should give it 2 or 3 days before we give up on an answer.
 
I've solved it now too. No way I would have without searching. Lot of clues were there, label, primary instrument, good guess at genre and time period. Even so it took a fair amount of work to get there. No shame in that I say. I did recognize the artist name and went 'oh, that's who that is, will have to give a listen'.

In all honesty I would not have gotten Mystic's Garrett Lund entry without searching - I'd seen that LP somewhere and had an idea of genre but no way was I going to pull that name out without looking up some things on the web.

I think enricosonic needs to augment the rules a bit in the OP. 2 or 3 days to solve may be fine but maybe we should expect a hint from the cover poster within 12 hours or so, obsure stuff maybe quite a bit earlier.

Bhundu, I like your thoughts about the joy of searching and the serendipity in that. I'd be a shame to keep that from people that like that kind of challenge for covers they don't already know by heart. How about for those more obscure ones, maybe the first solver post that they have it confirmed but don't give the answer right away, maybe just give an additional hint so others can get there too, similar to what happened on this last cover. Once another 'I got it' or two then back to first solver to post the next one. (Just thinking out loud here.)

I think taking what clues you can gather and doing the web research to identify the artist/title is within the spirit of this thread. God help us if we have to rely 100% on memory recall. And I agree about the fun of searching and serendipity of running across new combinations of genres, artists and titles.

I think it would be against the spirit of this thread if someone were using software to automate a brute force search by pattern of the cover images. I think searches on names and keywords is fair game.

I knew the previous title was by Ry Cooder and I thought the title was Into The Purple Valley, but I confirmed that by websearch.

That's my take. I say go for it Bhundu - if you've figured out the artist / title, post a web link to confirm and move on to the next entry.

Enricosonic can clarify, as needed.

Good guess. I should clarify that this is not an image of the inner cover. It's the outside of a gatefold cover. Front cover on the right side (with artist/title cutoff the top), back cover on the left side.
 
Wow, a lot's happened since I left.

I appreciate you guys trying to adhere to the rules I laid out. I should point out that they were laid out fairly quickly and perhaps weren't as thorough as needed. If there's a consensus that I re-word or improve them for clarity, let me know.

I figured there'd be unforeseen issues as this thing unfolded but I think bhundu, SpeakerLabFan and others have the right idea. Nothing wrong with web-searching to uncover clues in text or images. Unfortunately, we can't stop people from using technology beyond that, though that'd be a hollow victory and don't think would even be a fun way to play.

As far as I'm concerned, yeah, it's bhundu's turn.
 
Sorry I have been away. I formally hand it over to Mystic. I'll get one soon enough and I'm glad Enricosonic has given us some clarification. Sounds fair to use the clues to search. Wow. Got to get my hands on some Bo Hansson.
