There are plenty of dirt cheap speakers out there. I don't really understand why y'all are going so crazy over these. Sounds like they don't beat the Minimus 7s or NHT SuperZeros. I worry that buying products this cheap will only encourage RatShack to source and sell even more dirt cheap products -- with no regard to the quality therein.
I can much better understand the hoopla around the Insignia speakers, as they they have a coaxial tweeters, which is unheard of for anywhere near the price point. Because of that, I would have to imagine they image better than anything else under $100.

i picked up a pair of these yesterday. i got them because i might replace the caps sooner or later. it'd be my first try at such an undertaking, so obviously i won't be too broken-hearted if i mess it up beyond belief.
I saw the insignias this morning at best buy. they weren't hooked up, but based on looks alone (esp.w/ grilles off) they're pretty schweet. serious binding posts too. hmm... :scratch2:

But the Presidian's are only $15.
They weren't $15 to start with, they are on a manager special close-out. They currently are selling Yamaha & KLH instead of these.
I don't doubt that there are a very high number of speakers for sale, under $100 that sound really great. BUT... these are only $15, they aren't put together that bad, I can have fun tweaking them, and if I destroy them I'm only out the $15 (not $80, not $150, but $15). I don't think they are going to revolutionize the audio industry, but I'm having fun with an inexpensive speaker, a couple of bucks worth of batting, and a couple of little caps. I'm also listening to music that I like, and enjoying learning about how little it takes to change the output of a speaker.

Just finished listening to the ratshacks after upgrading the cap in the x-over to a 3.3uf Solen and filling with some poly fill. Best sounding $19 pair of speakers I've ever heard (that $19 including the caps used). Granted, they're not probably gonna replace the front speakers in your main rig, but for their size and cost they're pretty nice sounding. The new caps definitely helped the mids. Vocals sound better. The poly fill seemed to tighten up the bass, not so sloppy. So all in all I would say it was worth the pittance of time and money involved. May see if they have a couple more pairs for friends of mine.

Cool, I have the caps coming in the mail. Good to hear they make a difference. I am going to try to pick up another pair tomorrow, They will make great surround speakers. My mini 7's are still going to be my mains though.

ok, stupid newb question. Are the Dayton caps polarized? i got the Presidians a couple of days ago, and the caps are on their way from PE... just don't want to fry anything!
