The NFL needs more commercials.

hehehe...seems so, doesn't it.

maybe it needs more good behavior monitors too, eh?

DVR is the only way to go on any sporting event. I'm just starting the 4th Q of the Texans/Raiders :thmbsp:

I don't mind the pizzas so much, but damn, do I want some KFC. Nearest one is about 30 miles away :(

From the WSJ

-In a typical NFL game, about 60 minutes is dedicated to commercials
-Up to 75 minutes of huddles, coaches and players milling about
-More time is spent showing replays than the
-11 minutes the ball is in actual play
-The ratio of inaction to action is 10:1

That's why I'm becoming more interested in good soccer (World Cup, Premier League, etc.) than American football. Two 45 minute halves of uninterrupted play beats the chit out of the commercial fest that is American football. Worse yet, my local team is the nothing-but-drama Redskins.

That's why I like watching soccer too. It's also one reason why it is a tough sell here in U.S. All of the other major sports have been able to build commercials into the game. Soccer only has one fifteen minute half and the ads that are projected on the sidelines.

Yep! It is almost impossible for me to watch a game that is live (unless I go to it).

Football is the easiest for this -- 30 second skip gets to the next play pretty perfectly.

.dew.
True, which is why it is a pain to DVR Denver. Manning loves to screw up and hike before his 30 seconds are up.:D They should throw a flag or something.:nono:

Yet another reason I tuned out years ago. I get sick of being bombarded by marketing.

No ****, I refuse to subject myself to this non stop barrage; people should have more self respect. I stopped watching baseball when the teams installed those signs behind the batters, so that even during the course of the game I was subjected to commercials. **** that and **** them.

Besides, I realized the social purpose of big time sports is to give the average pellethead something trivial to be an expert about, lest he develop an interest in becoming expert on important things.

Quote of the day

Thanks Tom for your decision to spend your time on history rather than sports as I always find your insights and commentaries fascinating.

Really, it's pathetic what some clutter their minds with given the options available.

I despise TV advertising but the last NFL straw for me was the Michael Vick thing.
There's not enough rehabilitative hell in this world.......
The National Football League betrayed the whole human race when they let that poor excuse play again.
They can play back to back ads for all I care, I'm done with it.

Man, that's powerful medicine, but agreed wholeheartedly and completely.
Average person on the street might be able to tell you the stats on his favorite player, but ask them something important (insert unmentionable quasi-political factoid here) and they are clueless.

Don't wanna get into these waters too much, but damn, that's so true.

Another fine point.

To paraphrase Marx "Sports are the opiate of the masses" (for some people, not all, and can be enjoyed without obsession).
