The NFL needs more commercials.

Hiya,

I watch the NFL and I will not apologize for it nor stick my pinkie finger in the air or waggle on about what someone does to occupy his/her time.

We all have our things that we have a passion for that others don't understand. What we personally do with that lack of understanding defines us as a human race.

I can't judge anyone for what they like or don't like without stepping over some personal lines that leave me feeling dirty afterwards. And yes I step over them all the time as I am a human after all and I am not perfect nor do I want to be.

Tolerance and kindness is a virtue that I hope most of us can agree on.

That being said. The amount of commercials is directly related to the interest in the sport.

This is a free , capitalistic society last time I checked and the NFL falls within that last time I checked. The alternatives to that are not always better. And please don't start into some discourse about some system being better. I am just stating the situation as (As I personally see it) it stands.

This is public entertainment, not anonymous union labor. The profit comes from putting butts in seats and if the customers don't like you because you act like an asshole they don't pay you by staying away from your show.

I have to admit that while some of this may be true, there's a certain irony I n this. Face it, striking an child and a woman is a walk in the park for what goes on in theaters and primetime these days. I guess it's OK to pay big money to watch all sorts of violence, abuse, and who knows what on the screen, but if somebody does some watered down version in real life, it's the end of the world??? I really don't think either of these two acts would have caused too many of the NFL's direct customers to stay away. It certainly isn't changing any of my viewing habits.

I don't think a lot of fans care that much about either Rice's or Peterson's and that the media is fanning the fire. In Petersen's case, I'll bet money a lot of the folks here have been disciplined in a similar fashion, I know I have.

I also think that there's a lot of pressure coming from folks who don't even watch football and couldn't even name the teams Rice and Peterson play for or the positions they play. Aside from folks getting all wound up in the media, I haven't really heard a lot of talk about the Petersen deal, except among folks over 40 who had similar childhood incidents.

As for the NFL, let's ask the real questions for an entertainment business. Is attendance down? Ratings? I severely doubt it, so where is the damage to the league? Seems to me that they are getting a lot of free publicity out of this, and we all know the old saying....

People say this is the darkest depths of the NFL given the Dwyer arrest today, and perhaps the NFL bungled the Rice affair, but like some others have mentioned above, the mob mentality of social media seems to me to be a far greater threat, than some relatively mild acts of violence.

But I suggest that the NFL is just a barometer of society in general.

But how about this novel idea ??

Lets stop hitting each other no matter what the reason.

Woman ,Man, Child, Dog, Cat ..

If anything of all this uproar causes is more tolerance and thinking before raising a hand for even a few weeks its all worth it.

I figure we will go back to beating the crap out of each other soon enough. Trust me this is hardly new territory.

I am not holding my breath thinking that we will all start being kind to each other.

When I was a kid, team sports were emphasized for building character, team play, a sense of fairness, sportsmanship, the like. I NEVER did, And STILL don't, see the fun in knocking the home sweet hell out of each other for 3 hours over a stupid ball. I also kinda wondered about the smaller, weaker guys who got escorted off the field, or carried off, if they weren't lucky. I wondered about my Dad, who played football all thru grade school, hi school, & college, & who had a bad back the rest of his life because of it. Yet I paid DEARLY because of MY decision to want NO part of it. Always felt as my dad RESENTED me. I KNOW the football coaches did at a couple of the schools I went to-I had the size they SALIVATE over. People like Vick & the current bunch who are in hot water now DISGUST me-They were given The Brass Ring in life, & WHAT do they DO with it ? Wipe their rear ends w/it, & toss it back at the rest of us, laughing. They SHOULD be held to a higher standard than others-Because they've GOTTEN so much more than the rest of us have.

When I was a coming up I idolized Bart Starr. To me he was like one of the Mercury and Gemini astronauts. He had "the right stuff."

My dad, a very good man, told me flatly when I joined band in 6th grade that "I was gonna be a queer."

Yeah.

I played football again in 8th grade, undersized, and hated it. I remember turning to another weak guy, and said "You doing this for your dad as well?" He laughed, and said "Yeah, no ****."

He went on to be my drummer, we got PLENTY of tail, and now he tours with Travis Tritt. True story.
