I've used the Tabac product and it is worthy.
Low foam and slick like the Mitchell's. I get three passes from the lather build-up on my brush.
The smell is like roses and the price is right.

I like the Tabac line. And I'm really glad you posted this because I ran out of this shaving stick years ago and recently ORDERED MORE. It's coming from the UK so I'm patiently awaiting this. Your post made me look at the progress. Expected delivery November 4-7.

I travel with shaving sticks because they are easy to travel with. I have those plastic twist up cases I put them in for travel;

I have traveled with ARKO shaving stick, PALMOLIVE Shaving Stick, TABAC Shaving Stick and SPEICK Shaving Stick.

Arko pairs well with Mennen Skin Bracer aftershave, so that was my go-to travel pack for years. But lately I've been mixing it up with other shaving soap sticks.

Do you know of any modern metal cases?

ALOHA!

That synthetic brush looks really nice. In fact, I need to find another boar brush. I love the stiffer texture of them compared to my synthetic one. The boars seem like the workhorses of the shaving brush world.

When I was at Pasteur's Pharmacy in July, Leon (the owner) urged me to purchase that brush, stating it was one of the best buys in his entire store. It was very inexpensive, and honestly, is probably my favorite Synth brush to date.

'Manly Shaving' Question here:

Does anyone on the thread use a safe shaving technique that cuts facial hair when it grows in a different direction? I use Mantic59's "J-ing" technique for beard growth that grows in opposite direction (aka grain of hair, like grain of wood) under my jaw line. I hope this question makes some sense to you all.

I have nicked myself from time to time using the 'J' and would like to use something alternative and I just haven't found another effective technique. What do you say @BillyBatts or @KLH9 ?

I know. My favorites are Vanilla, Classic, Citrus Musk (for warm humid climates) and Lilac Vegital. But the Lilac Veg out of the bottle is rather strong.

SO, here is an awesome Barber Trick tip for you gents for taming down the nose of Pinaud Clubman Lilac Vegital aftershave.

Lilac Vegital aftershave is VERY old school. It dates back to Napoleon's soldiers using it to cover body odor when they were out in the field for months on end. Some find Lilac Veg off-putting. It is a bit strong, but can be toned down. Here is a barber trick to tame the nose of Lilac Vegital down significantly. If you do this, Lilac Vegital may become one of your favorite aftershaves.

Get an empty bottle that can hold the entire contents of the Lilac Veg aftershave. Pour 1/2 of the Lilac Veg into the empty Bottle. Then pour in 1/4 bottle of Witch Hazel. Then 1/4 bottle of water. THEN (and this is VERY important), put in 1 to 2 tablespoons of Wintergreen Alcohol. No more than 2 tops. No less than 1 minimum. The Wintergreen helps shape the nose of the fragrance.

This will do two things. I will double your supply of Lilac Vegital Aftershave. It will make it a lovely subtle fragrance that will remind you of barber shops in a bygone era.

I am familiar with J-ing, but I personally do not use any safe techniques for whisker grain. I do the classic three passes with a straight or DE razor. With the grain, cross grain, and finally against the grain for a BBS shave. To me, general shaving technique (pressure-speed-angle), blade choice, razor reveal and patience account for lack of nicks and cuts more than a special shaving technique. But that's only my opinion of course.

I'd be interested to see if you have any others chime in here and give us some pointers on their safe technique.

Just had a wonderful Sunday shave. Bought some Nivea Post Shave Balm today and boy... is it nice. It has a subtle cooling effect that lasts about 15 minutes and the scent is fantastic. Highly recommended.
  • Gillette Slim Adjustable on 4 with a Feather Blade. Working great on this setting (w/ Feather) compared to the 6.
  • Ever Ready Boar Brush
  • TOBS Organic Cream (this stuff is glorious)
  • Nivea Post Shave Balm

I recommend shaving with the grain even if it changes direction from the rest of your beard growth. Being a Black man I never shave against the grain. I shave the first pass with the grain, the second across the grain and that's it. I've managed some very close shaves with this procedure.

Shave of the Day...

Just received some Clubman Pinaud in the mail today and of course I had to dedicate a Friday shave to it. I found it a bit strong so, I mixed 1 parts Pinaud to 6 parts Thayers Original in a little Bushmills whiskey bottle. I had to drink the whiskey before the shave in order to have mixing vessel. I just couldn't for the life of me find anything else to put the mixture in.

Came out really nice. What a classic smell. My beloved boars hair Ever Ready brush broke earlier this week so I had to use my Omega Synthetic which I'm not a fan of. Nonetheless, had a wonderful shave. Very happy with the Clubman Pinaud. Great stuff for the price. Now I have to see if my wife likes it or not.
