Thorens owners group

I experience the same thing with my TT from time to time. I think it is the record that causes this to happen and not the tone arm or stylus. It may have to do with where the stylus lands when it is being lowered. I want to slow down the decent of my tone arm while queuing to see if the problem goes away. I don't think it does any harm but that is only a guess. I could be wrong.

I know what you mean. But the slide/skip with my stylus is much more bigger and stronger movement than what you described. I sometimes miss the very beginning of the intro, as the stylus slides or skips over and won't touch that area of the record. I am sure this is not normal. I have not had this kind of issue with other arms or TT's before.

I have noticed this same behavior especially on records which have just been cleaned (especially wet cleans). I find it best to play them 1-2 times on an older turntable which doesn't have as expensive stylus on it and then it comes good again. I notice a buildup of dust which gets dislodged from the grooves during cleaning building up on stylus on the first play, can also make an unusual dull clicking sound. Prefer to clean them dry by running anti static cloth over whilst turntable is spinning, only wet clean if there excessive grime or finger prints on the record itself. Maybe a higher anti-skate value would help, but I don't know how much this will affect the sound/stylus/vinyl wear.

I seem to have this happen when I queue the record too far to the outside. I think the record rim acts like a ramp and sends the stylus down slope. It seem to happen mostly on my TD125 II which has a very light, undamped Grace 707 with almost no anti-skate.

Some records are just so stubborn in that respect, I know my very worn out abbey road is notorious for it at the start of side 2. My thorens td 165 with a TP-16 arm does this often, but the td 160 super with the sme 3009 series 2 improved does not do it at all. I also notice some outer starting grooves can be sloped down depending on the record itself.

How good is the tonearm on a stock TD-145?
Or asked another way, how inferior is it?

Any recommended arms that offer a substantial upgrade in performance without breaking the bank and suit this TT to a tee?

The arm on this table is mint - as is the rest of the table.

Thanks for your thoughts!

You stated your question correctly the first time, you have to climb the ladder quite a ways to better the stock arm.

:tears:How does one cope with PTSA (Post Thorens Separation Anxiety)? I'm in the middle of the 8 to 10 week waiting period for a Soundsmith retip.

Well, finding a support group can be beneficial.

But not this one, all you get here is people talking and sharing about their Thorens tables which will only prove to increase your anxiety level.

Have you tried the "What are you drinking now" thread?

Thanks guys.

Finca Los Primos - Malbec

Getting by with the backup table for now, a Technics SL-1500 with a Shure M97xe with the Jico stylus.

But I want my TD-160 back.

Retip takes that long eh? Why not just mount another cartridge in the mean time? I find tweaking other turntables help kill the time, haha. Granted waiting for parts to come in doesn't help.

I am more than happy with everything, except for one thing:

Every now and then when lowering the cartridge on to the outer groove with cueing mechanism, the needle takes a sudden movement towards the spindle, I mean it slides or takes a little skip making a horrible sound. Not outwards, put inwards. The arm has a little horizontal movement towards the same point when lowering.

Any idea what to do with this annoying thing? I have cleaned the rubber thing there in the cueing system, and also the underside of the arm. The TT and platter are in balance, I have checked this with a bubble leveler. I have set antiskate and tracking force for 1,5 grams, everything done according to manual.

I am having the same issue. I recently bought a Shure V15 Type III with a NOS V35MR stylus. It is mounted on one of the TP63 armwands for my TP16 MkIII arm. For reasons I do not understand, the Shure has a tendency to jump toward the spindle when lowering the arm at the lead-in groove. I have not experienced this with the other 5 or so cartridges I use with this table/arm. Everything is setup to the nines. I am very careful not to lower the stylus on the outside of the lead-in groove. I can't figure this out either. Perhaps this has something to do with the Shures?:dunno:

I have had an Ortofon OMB10 and a Shure M95ED do this on my TP-16 arm, it always depends on the record for me. I think my SME 3009 Series 2 Improved arm has a better anti-skate/balance system which is why it hardly does it. I have mentioned that it never did it but now I think of it, the 3009 has done it a couple of times too :D
