Thorens TD-150 Project

Very nice post and nice TD150mkII to start with. I have a Thorens TD150mkII that is modified to the hilt. Linn size Plinth made of maple hardwood but a new is coming from Singapore made with Ash hardwood.Next is a Sole Sub-Chassis aluminium mdf aluminium bonded together with high tech aerospace adhesive and Linn springs rubber and bolts, for the 110v motor it's powered by a Mose/Hercules II psu you can get one on ebay now for a very good price.And the tonearm a AudioQuest PT6 on a Linn size armboard with a Denon DL110 cartridge and sometimes I use a Rega rewired RB250 on a Linn armboard.In the bearing I have a Hard metal Thrust plate . So how does it sound will great it runs speed perfect bass is right and so on and so on.

We are back on this project, I have reassembled the TT after a thorough cleaning, all of the switches have been lubed, the springs and grommets have been cleaned, and you will notice the new caps in the motor circuit courtesy of Sparksaflyin. I did not do a step by step of the reassembly as it is just the reverse of the teardown, I do however recommend taking pictures of your teardown, I referred back to this thread a number of times during the assembly of the table.

The Table is leveled up and ready to tune the suspension now, take your time here, make sure that the table is level, then just adjust the springs until the platter is level and you have a nice straight bounce.

With the suspension all tuned up we can move on to centering up the belt. The adjustment screw is rotated until you can get the belt to center up on the motor pulley.

A common misconception here is trying to get the belt centered up on the inner platter, we really don’t care where it rides on the inner platter, if it is centered on the motor pulley it will ride in the correct spot on the inner platter.

Great work so far, and a great idea to get the table in rotation to get a feel for it's stock performance characteristics. I can't wait to see what you have in mind.

Installed an AT 440Mla, there are some headshell issues that still need to be resolved, I am going to have to change the leads, the headshell side is soldered on, so it is a little more than just plugging new ones on, here are a couple of beauty shots as she spins some 6 eye Brubeck on the garage system.

So far it sounds pretty good with a rough set up and no antiskate yet.

Sparksaflyin fixed up the headshell problems, we replaced the headshell leads, I have tweaked and aligned the cart, and ground a nut down to 1.4 grams and made a antiskate weight.

After I polished up the platter we now have an essentially new stock Thorens TD-150!

I will spend some time with it on the garage system, then move it to the main system and get a feel for the sound, then I will pass it around to Bsujeep and Sparksaflyin so we can get several opinions on the sound, we will then start the modification process.

Did you set the stylus overhang as per the manual namely 230mm from stylus tip to vertical tone arm bearing ?

Thank you, I did set the cart at the specs from the manual, 49mm from the back of the headshell or 230mm from the vertical tone arm bearing, but I'm not very happy with the results so far, I am still tweaking a little here and there to find out what is best, if I find a protractor that works I will post it here.
