today's AMBIENT selection

How about the Penguin Cafe Orchestra. I've have an old album of theirs and have found myself enjoying it many a time over the years. Although I'm not sure all their work would be considered ambient.

Just a quick note: I've replaced some of the pictures in here with better ones. I'm still getting used to using a better/newer camera, and I'm not accustomed to having to manually focus every time I take a picture - that's why some of them came out pretty bad, and a few in here still should be replaced but I don't have the time at the moment.

Beat me to it! I put Discreet Music on to sleep to, love it in vinyl but the CD version is quieter. How about Steve Roach's Begin Were I End or Infinite Shores. Love electronica and industrial from the 70's and 80's most groups had quieter pieces that would qualify as Ambient. Between Group, Holger Czukay (post Can). Great thread!

I haven't heard those two Roach albums, but considering how many albums that guy has, it isn't surprising. I'm a big Can fan, but haven't gotten to Czukay's solo stuff yet.

Another person I'm really into, whose seminal work was released in the 70s and 80s, is former Tangerine Dream member Klaus Schulze. More on him when he's on the day's playlist.

This evenings fun with ambient selection: Phallus Dei - Nature Mortes. Sorta kinda dark ambient but not heavy.

Closing The Eternity
Northern Lights Ambience (7" 45rpm single)

Drone Records, April 2006, lmtd. 300

There's an actual metal key glued to the cover of the sleeve - that's not a picture of one. From the notes inside:

"Recorded during 2003 by 121 using synths and northern lights' soundings."

I didn't know the northern lights made sounds.

I seem to be using Ambient as a musical palette cleanser these days. I have a hankering to hunt down some new classical music so I'm using it to transition from the experimental rock groove I've been in lately. Tonight's listening:

The last one might be minimalist-jazz-ambient but who's counting. It's great no matter the tag.

It says "Death Ambient." :)

What do you think of the Cluster and Eno? I've gotten really close to pulling the trigger on the reissue a couple times.

Klaus Schulze
Timewind

Brain, 1975

If you're curious about Schulze, I recommend starting with this one. Don't know what was being smoked/eaten when the cover was designed but I want some of it:

I like it but it's not my favorite "& Eno" type work. I was just looking at vinyl prices for my favorite, it still appears to be a little more expensive than I'd like to pay.

I like that, and I think I know just what you mean. I often end the evening's listening session with ambient music. It sort of resets the brain, and brings everything to a quiet conclusion, though not necessarily one lacking depth. There's a reason it's referred to as "deep listening."

In that very spirit, tonight's session winds down with my favorite Tangerine Dream album:

Hmm, I should probably take some better pictures of this one. :scratch2:

Can you guys give a loose definition of ambient? I enjoy Massive Attack and Thievery Corporation, do they qualify?

I see that someone posted a Don Cherry album. I have all of his most important releases, is that the ambient vibe?

Is it more a mood than a sound?

Here's one of Eno's definitions: ""Ambient Music must be able to accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." I have a hard time drawing the line on some electronic music and I think the genre a band (or album) is listed under has more to do with the intended audience than what it actually sounds like sometimes.

It would appear those groups are listed as downtempo/electronic so certainly in the neighborhood of ambient. They've both got to be closer than "Bush of Ghosts".

The Riley/Cherry thing I listed is the only thing I know from him that's close. The 1970 studio album is more drone/minimalist and not what I'd consider ambient and the rest of Cherry's stuff seems more avant than ambient.

I usually just cheat by going to Rate Your Music and seeing if any of the genres listed are ambient.
