today's AMBIENT selection

Excellent dreamy soundscapes Andy, didn't know this group yet.
I'm gonna be looking into them for sure, love this kind of stuff. :thmbsp:

Glad you like it. That's the beauty of the music forum, that we can point each other in the direction of new artists.

And now I'm going to close out my evening with more Stars of the Lid - Avec Laudenum (LP, 2008 reissue, Kranky).

R-1306368-1271616577.jpeg

This one is significantly more minimal than And Their Refinement … It's one of my favorite albums to wind down with before I go to bed; the only trouble is I struggle not to fall asleep in my listening chair - not so good when you have a manual turntable.

R.Y.N. (7" 45rpm single)

Side A: Whistle and I'll Come to You
Side B: A Warning to the Curious

April, 2006 Drone Records, lmtd. pressing 300 copies

Noise, almost like a bunch of chainsaws that are at first off in the distance, getting closer and closer.

I like them so much I have very release form them I could find here. Again, many things for mentioning them.

I'm gonna be digging deeper into this thread to find some more soundscapy goodness in here.

If I were you, being neighbors with Germany, I would check out Drone Records. The 7" I posted above is on that label (but no longer available). That's if you're into the really minimal "deep listening" type of ambient. It's my favorite. :)

Please allow me to add something entirely different than Stars Of The Lid;
Jan Jelinek - Loop Finding Jazz Records
Which does have beats but is also wonderfully sedate (to me anyway)/scapy stuff.
http://boomkat.com/cds/19770-jan-jelinek-loop-finding-jazz-records
(pretty loud music player in the link..)

Scape, the label on which this was released has more fantasic ambient/dubby electronic stuff. And Jan Jelinek also released good stuff under the name Farben.

has anyone posted 'far away trains passing by', comp. Ullrich Schnauss? i've got that one and i think another title too, but can't quite seem to locate them in the crates....

again, gorgeous suggestions of distance, space, isolation, location, wistfulness without the treacle....

Hmmm I have to visit my usual record store soon I guess, the guy running it has a lot of rare/underground elektronical stuff and a lot of knowledge on the subject. Perhaps he has some Drone stuff too in the bins.

http://www.antenne-tilburg.nl/antenne/

A lot he has is not listed on the site unafortunately.

Can't find your RYN or drone tracks online to check it out..

Oh I forgot about him. I only have mp3s of his albums, I do like them.

I'm not surprised you can't find it, I think it's about as obscure as something can be, and only appealing to people who are into drone/minimal ambient, which I'm sure is not a large group.

If I weren't broke right now I'd make you a tape of it and mail it to you. Maybe at some point in the future, if you have a tape deck.

I really need to set up one of my CD players, I have a lot of really neat ambient on CD (and I mean a LOT), the vast majority of my music in this genre is on CD actually. I think you all would enjoy it, and maybe find something you like. Perhaps I'll do that tonight or tomorrow.

I have no tape deck, but heck I'd buy one for this kind of stuff :thmbsp:
(sharing FLAC {or the likes} will be a lot easier though)

Tarantel (7" single)
s/t

2000 Static Caravan
No song titles
U.K. pressing

This is an indie "ambient" band. About ten years ago my now ex-girlfriend got me this from a Philly record store since it was recommended by someone working there. Well, she listened to it before giving it to me and was really disappointed. Not much happens, or so it seems at first. But now, many years later, I have a deep appreciation for ambient and minimal work like this, so the little record has a new place in my collection - one that I'll actually reach into once and a while.

Side A is the stronger of the two, with a low frequency echo that makes it sound as if you're inside a tunnel, and there's some large machine at the end of it. Various other sounds ornament the piece as it moves along at a slow pace, but instead of causing you to listen to events like you normally would, this song does just what it should: it pulls you into another world, and consequently into another mood. Side B is good, but introduces a very slow drum beat, and I think the 7" would have been better without any percussion.

That little squarish gray thing to the left was in the sleeve, and seems to have been cut out of a photograph.

Yeah you're right - unfortunately I'm not properly set up to record vinyl digitally at the moment lol! I mentioned the tape deck thing because I have a really nice Nakamichi DR-1, but I understand most people ditched cassettes altogether some two decades ago. :)

Harold Budd
La Bella Vista

2003 Shout! Factory

An ambient selection for later on tonight (or, this morning).

Experimental Audio Research
The Köner Experiment

1997 Sonic Boom/Space Age Recordings

Pulse-driven ambient work of the more psychedelic kind.

Popol Vuh
In den Gärten Pharaos

2004 SPV Recordings
Originally released in 1971
Made in Germany

A classic. I typically prefer ambient music that's sans a percussive element, and this recording doesn't fit into that category. However, one can't deny the ambient nature of this hypnotizing piece. In other words, it draws you in, and you find yourself enveloped in the rhythm and atmosphere that the artists created.

Now for something much darker...

Lustmord
The Monstrous Soul

1990 Side Effects, London

Entertaining if you can stand to hear the sampled dialogue repeat "It is the night of the demon" about 100 times at the beginning of the album. :D

I'm going to show you the list of "instruments" from inside the CD booklet, just because it's a great example of an artist creatively utilizing unusual tools to develop a very present and intense atmosphere:

"Produced at the Anterior Digital Research Station.

Utilising [British sp.]:
Military Specification Signal Field Generator No. CT334.
Beat Frequency Oscillator Type HO32.
Radiometer.
Computer Assisted Acoustic Mapping and Phase Countour Ratios.
Prototype Psycho Active Generators."

The end result is rather unsettling palette of hellish sounds that somehow seem frighteningly familiar...

Apalusa
Live From The Dry Valley's (limited 3" CD-R single)

2008 Straight Outta Sneinton music
"was recorded upstairs in Nottingham, January 2008."

I got this through the Hypnos website (a label/company that specializes in ambient music), it's a very limited run. Can't remember the exact number, but it's less than 100. I have a few more similar to this, but won't be listening to them tonight.

This is deep, howling ambient that unfolds slowly over the course of about 20 minutes. Good stuff.
