today's AMBIENT selection

oh, and if you're not familiar - the 'ambient artists of Kompakt' he's referring to are mostly the Pop Ambient comps on the german label Kompakt, which was started by the guy who records as GAS. i wouldn't call most of GAS 'ambient' - just music so good/innovative that it defies categorization.

I became somewhat obsessed with the Kompakt label years ago and bought a bunch of their Speicher techno series records. Then I learned that they have some ambient-leaning artists on their label and got a few of those, which are very nice. But even some sides of various Speicher records are more ambient than anything else.

Thanks guys, glad you like it. Here's side B for good measure.

Grouper (Liz Harris) is a DIY/drone/lofi artist out of Portland, OR. Her voice and music is beautiful and I would recommend a listen.

I wondered about posting it to ambient - I know less than nothing about NiN, have never heard more than a few seconds of 'Spiral' and 'Machine.' It clearly *sounds* like ambient (whatever that means) but I figured the pedigree might mean it belongs in industrial or psych.

Interestingly, after I posted I looked up reviews of the album and found reference after reference to Eno, Eno & Fripp, etc. I guess it was seen at the time of its release as 'dark ambient,' another term I don't pretend to understand.

(btw - What is it with the obscurities in metal? My daughter fronts a metal/hardcore band (They're listed on the cover of this month's Maximum Rock & Roll) and when she explains the genre to me, it's always like 'nu death speed metal with post punk on top...')

Have you ever seen how many sub-genres of "Electronica" (not a real word) there are? :D

Good thread! I'm an ambient fan. I used to listen to 'Musical Starstreams' back in the day, and still catch Hearts of Space now and again. You've all beat me to several suggestions (someone else besides me has heard of Seefeel!).
Glad you mentioned Steve Roach here, Structures from Silence is an all-time classic and I listen to it all the time.
Recently came across my copy of Aphex Twin/Selected Ambient Works, good to hear that again.
Totally from left field, find and download a copy of 'usmile ambient', a Justin Bieber song electronically slowed down 800%. It's a 3-minute pop song turned into 23 minutes of what I can only call 'ambient'.
Also digging Alva Noto, who's been around for a while but I've only recently discovered. The album I have is 'Trioon', a collaboration with Ryuichi Sakamoto.
I kinda got away from Tangerine Dream, but I'm seeing titles here I never heard, perhaps I've got to go back...
